ISIS stood for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham. Al-Sham was formerly a caliphate on the land that is now Syria, Israel, Jordan, etc. ISIL stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. The Levant is a more historical/traditional name for Syria.
