62 years later, the aftermath is still troubling global politics.

Operation Ajax was a pivotal moment in US and world history. It was the first time the CIA overthrew a government.

Yet even today the US government would rather not talk about it. That’s why it remains an unknown story for many Americans.

The year was 1953. The objective was to oust Mohammad Mossadegh, the elected leader of the Majlis, Iran’s parliament.

Mossadegh was not a communist or a radical Islamist. He didn’t follow any objectionable ideology. Instead, he was a secular nationalist. But he was inconvenient.

I had a friend who was assigned in 1943 or thereabout to Iran to build a rail and road system which would allow the United States to supply the Russians with military equipment to fight the Germans.  He spent a couple years in Iran and said the people were very friendly toward the Americans.  When the Shah was put into power as America's puppet the corruption and repression of the Iranian people went into full force and effect, and like Sadham the royal palaces and corruption fueled discontent.  We fail to learn from history.  The same special interests which caused the coup in the fifties are alive and well demanding war and invasion of Iran.  We, the American people have done immeasurable damage to the Iranian people, yet just forty years ago their students freely attended our Universities and western influences were obvious when visiting Iran as Iran was aligned with America in the Cold War and Iraq was aligned with the Soviet Union and surprisingly the French, again from left over colonial imperialism which exploited the oil resources of the region.

We have a path to Normalcy.  When my friend who has since died was building those roads and rails in Iran......the people of that country respected us.  We are the ones who have to earn that respect back.  America once stood for good over evil, but our history is sadly scattered with these type of examples.....may our leadership find the wisdom the do what is right.
