WASHINGTON D.C. – In a speech delivered at the Vietnam War Memorial on the 40th Anniversary of the end of the conflict, Senator Ted Cruz has called upon the Obama Administration to remove the unsightly monument.
“History is on our side!” says Cruz. “And this monument is a nefarious, unjust depiction that mistakes were made. Mistakes were not made. We don’t make mistakes.”
Vietnam Vet Jan Scruggs, who is actually a boy despite his first name, came up with the idea for the memorial during a screening of “The Dear Hunter.” After securing funds, a nationwide competition began for the design, which was won by architectural student Maya Ling, and building was completed in March of 1982. The memorial consists of 482 feet of solid black granite upon which the names of soldiers who were classified as KIA (Killed in Action) or MIA (Missing in Action) are etched. Juxtaposed to most Washington monuments, which are made of white marble and reach out into the sky, the Vietnam Memorial actually sinks into the earth, symbolizing the burial of the 53,300 men and women who never made it home alive.
It is tradition for friends and family members of the fallen to make impressions of the names of their brethren with parchment paper and wax crayons. The practice is referred to as “Rubbing one out.”
“But they used Optima.” says Fox News Analyst Ann Coulter, referring to the typeface with which the names are etched. “Anybody who knows anything knows that you should never use anything but Times New Roman . . . and why’s it gotta be so black?”
Critics of the Vietnam Wall have been silent for decades. Much like farting in church or pushing over a line of Harley Davidsons parked in front of a biker bar, the idea of speaking out against something that is so personal to people, could get you killed.
