So, I go in to look at some running shoes and to visit a store I have never patronized, ever. I thought I was on a car lot from the get go. I've never been hovered over so much except at local car dealers when just trying to look at the merchandise. Not by one, but by two salespersons. The initial salesperson, a female, wants to play 20 questions. I finally get her to leave I so I can get a few minutes alone just to see what is in stock. I finally start to get into looking at some of the shoes and by GAWD if the next salesperson didn's start pestering me. WTF? Can't a person peruse a bit when trying to look at the merchandise? Hello!!!

I get the kid to leave me alone...finally. I'm looking at some of the brands now that I've seen on the net and in magazines and I was quite disappointed in the prices. I was looking at a Saucony style shoe that sells for about $65 and Running Wild has it for neary $100. The prices were 20% or more higher that what I have seen locally at a strip mall in Pace and even on the internet. I guess Pensacola Running Wild caters to those other than middle class from what prices I saw on shoes and clothes.

Im not sure about the clientel of that place, but I have experianced that at a lot of places, especially the past year. People are desperate to make a sale.

What Ive seen and Im sure some others here can expand on this is in a economy such as this one, small bussinesses end up having to hike thier prices to make ends meet and large walmart like are able to buy large quantities and sell it for cheaper prices making the hwole cycle that much more vicious.

These people sounded desperate to make a sell to me.

I buy my New Balance running shoes at Academy Sports. A very large selection of shoes besides NB.

Back when I was running 40 or so miles a week I bought my shows there. The salespeople are foot specialists there and want to make certain you get the right shoe for your individual foot. Sometimes you pay for what you get. Shoes for just walking around are one thing but shoes for long distance and racing need to be just right.

If you're racing long distances, the shoes can definitely make all the difference. Sometimes, you have to pay a little more to get the best, including the best service. That store gives individualized fittings.

I used to run a lot for a couple of reasons- coaching and to avoid my ex in the evenings. LOL. When I ran competitively, I used three pair of shoes for runs. Two for training and one for racing. I'd like to get back to running more, just need some extra energy. I'm doing P90x six days per week and once I am done with it, running is the last thing on my mind. BTW, I am faster than Paul Ryan, but most midpackers are anyhow. I ran around a 3:13 marathon (Blue Angel) in 1998 before they changed the course. It qualified me for Boston in the 35 and older age group. I never got to run it though. Would have been a hoot.

Not everyone needs someone to pick their shoes out for them. I know how a shoe is supposed to fit after having coached cross country for a decade. What I want is for someone to leave me alone in the store until I pick out something to buy. It is not that hard of a concept. I emailed them what I described earlier. I never mentioned price either, just the pesky salespersons.

NO, what is sad is that many of the world's best elite runners from places like Kenya and Ethiopia start out in makeshift shoes just like that and end up spanking our fannies in track and field/cross country.

This guy is one of them-

There were no busses when he was a child so he walked/ran the distance of a 10k to school and then in the evenings back home. While we are scared to not let our children walk more than 1/4 mile to a bus stop because it might rain on them, folks like Gebrselassie prayed for rain either way to cool them off.

They have highly intelligent people there. All you need to do is simply say, "Thank you, but I'll let you know when I need help."

Pace, I have mixed feelings about Running Wild. They were of great help to me when I first started out with a fitting that put me in the shoe I still train in today, but as I became better educated and more specific about my equipment, they rarely have what I want in stock. That forced me to order online when I would really rather support local business.

The upside is that they offer training classes (expensive) and weekly runs sometimes with free classes afterwards which I can see would be beneficial to the novice runners out there.

I lost even more interest when I found that they push you to wear their company branding in races....and you have to pay for it! While I understand the up charges on shoes to have what you want in stock and have someone with more knowledge than a sophomore in high school, I will not be paying to be a banner advertisement for their races unless they are willing to sponsor me which at my advanced age is not too likely, lol.

I realize that they have to play a delicate balance when it comes to maintaining inventory, but after two trips across town to find they did not have my size in socks kind of did it for me.

That said the owner is a good guy as are several of their employees who, as the result of being athletes themselves, get a little fired up about their products. I expect these kids were weekend workers under orders to sell, sell, sell. There is one person who gets to me for not asking about my running....but more personal questions...like where i live and work which makes me a little edgy.

All the more reason to buy from the large retailers elsewhere from what you are telling me. I can't believe they charge people for training, but I guess since Coach Keely stopped coaching the youth in AAU track (Pensacola Wings) around here someone had to fill the power vacuum. I paid for training for about 6 months. Learned quite a few things from a well known and successful American distance runner. He charged $30 per month. I was pretty close in setting my schedule for tempo runs, easy runs, long runs and then speedwork with what he set out for me to do. I actually had to ask him to step it up a bit with the training and he did. Got a PR in the aforementioned BA Marathon back in 98. Aside from maybe Everett Whiteside, Coach Keely, and Matt Dobson, I wouldn't pay for anyone's training around here.
