I have seen how salt trucks used to go around with a dump full of salt and a rotary distributor on the back broadcast spreading bits of salt over the road and ice. Today I saw a really neat system where instead of salt in the bed of the truck they have a 2k gallon mixture of chemicals which deice. You will be driving down the street and see white lines about an inch thick which are continuous and spaced about 8-10 in a lane of traffic. When snow or ice begins to cover the road these stripes melt the ice and snow and do not allow an ice cover to form. I will have to watch this winter how these systems work, but it seems a lot more efficient use of the salt and chemicals.
