Documenting the Arrests of Journalists in Ferguson
August 19, 2014

By Runa A. Sandvik Follow @runasand
Last updated: October 15 2014, 05:41 PM EST - 22 journalists arrested

On Aug. 13, 2014, police in Ferguson, Missouri, assaulted and arrested two journalists for allegedly failing to exit a McDonald's quickly enough while on a break from covering the protests. Since then, police actions against journalists in Ferguson have escalated in severity and frequency. Many have been tear gassed and shot with rubber bullets and at least nine more have been arrested.

It should go without saying that these arrests are a gross violation of the reporters' First Amendment rights, and attempts to prevent journalists from lawfully doing their job on the streets of Ferguson are downright illegal. We will be documenting each journalist arrest below and are filing public records requests for the arrest records of the journalists who have been assaulted, detained, and arrested in Ferguson. All requests are publicly available on MuckRock.

We insist that the St. Louis County Police Department, Ferguson Police Department, and Missouri Highway Patrol cease and desist from violating the Constitutional rights of reporters covering the protests, and respect the court document they all signed agreeing that the media and members of the public have a right to record public events without abridgement. This document is not necessary, as the First Amendment provides that right to all members of the media and public, but it's an indication of how the police have decided to ignore the law.

Freedom of the Press Foundation is monitoring the situation and will be filing requests and updating this blog post for as long as necessary.

Run along.....they need to go back to their own filthy countries and let us deal with the issue and any agency that stores things at "Muck Rock(muck rakers ever heard of them?)" IS BIASED.

Everyone is looking for that Pulitzer Prize at the expense of the local people trying to move through this situation. Reporters are "merecenary like" in their desire to get the story. They will throw anyone under the bus to get something to print even if it is not the truth.

Due to conflicting reports, what happened between Brown and Wilson remains uncertain. According to one witness, Brown and his friend attempted to walk away when the officer fired his weapon, shooting the unarmed Brown, whose hands were in the air. According to police statements, a physical confrontation between the officer and Brown resulted in the officer shooting the unarmed Brown.

The shot was fired inside the police car.....Brown was not walking away.

Biased reporting.

I agree. Amnesty International has a long track record of showing political despots abusing citizens seeking freedom. They are biased.

All the publications in bold are US-based, not foreign. That means they're IN their own country.

The racist tirade against Obama, plus the yank-yer-chain tirades against everything except corporate control of the government and the environment, spewed by Pacedog and Herr Markle, our resident Nazi, remind me here every day why I dislike, disdain, and distrust hard right conservatives.

With them, pollution is good, war is great, poverty is evil, and things like workers earning living wages, are plain, downright, anti-Christian concepts that need to be corrected.

It's good to know your enemies!
