No and the cop that shot him should go to jail if the facts support it. On the other hand some of the looters and crazies "protesting violence" did, some were shooting at a police helicopter.

Violence of this sort against property even before the
Cop is charged or not isn't justifiable. Even afterwards, why take your frustration out on someone not even related to the actual incident ?????...for instance maybe the cop's property and not innocent businesses that just happen to be where the rioting starts. Is a business owner just supposed to suck it up and pay those costs per the insurance? Who pays for that? Consumers. I hope that if a business owner protected his property with force and had to shoot someone to keep the flash mob from stealing or destroying his property , a jury would never find them guilty.

The answer to every social problem is not a gun. More police training in community relations is in order. Having cops go out in pairs of black/white would also help. More black cops are needed and a venue for discussing community problems needs to be established. There needs to be a way to bridge the gap between the races in order to foster understanding.

The family of the victim has called for the violence to stop as have outside leaders of the black community. This type of behavior, while offering brief catharsis for the rioters, does not solve problems in the long run.

As can be seen by postings here the riots turn the victims into the bad guys and focuses attention on the destruction  of property. It feeds into this ongoing view that somehow it is the fault of black culture that is the real problem. This is a neat trick but let's not forget the contributions, if you can call them that, made by our white culture that have had a large effect on why things are the way they are.

Let's hope that with the help of the FBI that the investigation will go forward and result in revealing what happened that day when a man was killed for walking down the street.

When government fails to protect you, a gun might be all that stands between you and a perp/flash mob looking to do you, your family, or a hard earned/worked for business from being destroyed.

Oh, and the RACE card....more black cops are needed? Did it occur to you that there are minority preference hirings in every governmental agency from sea to shining sea? You can't legislate employment participation. Have you ever seen any other group act out in any way similar if a person of their race was killed by the police? I'll wait for that link to appear.

So he was just walking down the street....are you assuming he was completely innocent before the ongoing investigation is completed?

That's an interesting speculation . . . just what would happen if black cops shot down an unarmed white teenager for walking down a public street?

The National Guard would have to be called to protect the cops, and you know I'm right.

Yeah, Pacedog, your view of the world is completely asinine.

How many incidents are there anywhere in the country of a black policeman shooting a white unarmed person?

Holy cow, yes. Out of 53 cops only 3 are black even though the city says it has trouble retaining black cops. Just imagine what it would be like to be a rookie black cop in a department with attitudes like the ones we're hearing about. It would be hard to take to say the least.

I have not heard one way or the other on that question.

Correct.

See above postings in which I list numerous incidents of racially directed harassment and injustice such as Jim Crow laws, etc.

Innocent until proven guilty. What we know for sure is the victim was unarmed and the bullet(s) that killed him came from the cop's gun.

Yes, I think everyone agrees that the initial encounter between the teenagers and the police was when the police drove by and told the two kids to get out of the street and things unraveled from there.

For whatever reason the minority preference hirings, if they are in effect, have had no meaningful impact on Ferguson's police department. Only 3 out of 53 on the force are black.

Your observation re protecting family and property with a gun represents a real situation that likely would not exist had community relations been dealt with on a daily basis instead of letting tensions and grievances accumulate over time. By ignoring problems and pretending they don't exist they only become larger.

I am not condoning the violence, let's be clear about that. I'm saying that there are effective ways of living in diverse groups that need to be employed in cases like this. Unfortunately, issues/concerns have not been handled and now there is mistrust to work through too.

I think the cops need backup.
