I remember this big wooden contraption you would put your feet in with a pair of shoes which showed how well they fit.......how many people today have cancer because of the same.

My paternal grandmother received massive doses of xrays in 1927 while she was pregnant with my father, supposedly for treatment of arthritis in her hands. She apparently insisted that the doctor give her extra treatments. By the 1950s all fingers on her left hand had been removed and two from her right hand. Her remaining thumb and two fingers on the right were frozen and non functional. She routinely developed skin cancers that had to be removed, too.

Radiation was a novelty in its early era. It turned out to be very lethal stuff.

I sadly used these shoe fitting machines as a child. What are we exposing our children to today? I guess a story has Colgate toothpaste full of cancer causing toxins. We have become so complex and the simple wood and metal world of two centuries ago has been replaced by compounds, plastics, and toxins which were not even imagined in a simpler time.

They had one in the Navy Point Stores.  I can well remember using them.  side note.  My Grand Parents lived in a company(AAC) phosphate mining town, in south Florida.  My uncle fell from a swing and broke his arm.  The company Doctor used the shoe x-ray machine to set his arm...A much told story in our family  LOL

I never saw one of those contraptions in any shoe store I shopped at as a kid. I guess I lucked-out.

1957 Pennsylvania is first US state to ban use of these machines.

Might have been a little before your time...  I think they quit using them before 1957,,,

Quite a few years ago I went to Yard sale at Naval Housing on Corry field. The guy had a large bottle of Mercury for sale. It was really neat, very very heavy, may a pint or so of the stuff. I bet it was enough to contaminate a large area. I did not buy it(he only wanted 5 dollars for it). I guess he was some kind of instrument tech. I have often wondered what happened to it...

I remember it very well. My dad insisted that I had to have Buster Brown saddle oxfords. I wanted penny loafers, but I got the saddle oxfords. Meanwhile, just before 3rd grade, I got a ringworm on my head. The dermatologist, after the sulfur treatment failed, decided to give me an x-ray treatment on my head. If you think that's funny, I have a basal cell carcinoma to show you.
