I have a step-great grandfather who was a roving reporter for Harper's Magazine in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. He covered the Boer War from the side of the Boers and once got caught in a fire-fight between Boer fighters and British soldiers. My Dad told me that Mr. E. was attacked by a British soldier who tried to cut him with a bayonet, and Mr. E., who was an excellent fighter, killed the soldier.
