This is one of the things which defines me as a boomer, Sal, the worst generation evar.
It was 1960. I was 11 years old.
It was before Vietnam. Before hippies. Before Kennedy (just barely).
The setting: The Pensacola Beach Casino (the "Casino" was where we got cheeseburgers and played the pinball machines and listened to the jukebox which was adjacent to the beach at Pensacola Beach).
The record: "Devil or Angel" - Bobby Vee. This was a cover of a song recorded several years earlier by the Clovers but of course I had no clue about that at the time - I was eleven goddamn years old for christs sakes.
This and the B-side of the record ("Since I Met You Baby which was a cover of an Ivory Joe Hunter record) was my introduction to music as a boomer.
It was the first time I stopped playing the pinball machines and stopped eating the cheeseburger and listened to music.
You will find it campy and corny. But for me it's a nostalgia trip you can't believe. And the beginning of my life-long love of doowop.
