However, on July 10th, 2005, Fort Pickens was pummeled by Hurricane Dennis destroying what was left of the road leading into Fort Pickens. After the clean-up began, the only way to get to the fort was either by making the
7-mile trek on foot or by boat.

After more than three years of restoration, Fort Pickens officially opened to the public on May 29th.

Quit making sense.  

Actually, as an aside:  it could turn out that the evacuation saves a lot of trouble doing the same in advance of the tropical weather likely heading for our area this weekend.   Pickens could very likely have been forcibly emptied of campers/visitors anyway.
