I'm about to show you very rare 16mm color film of Palafox Street in 1942. And Pensacola Beach. And the old Bay Bridge.

Set the youtube to HD (720p) and full screen to fully experience this.
The video is only 4 minutes in length. First you will see New York City, then Jacksonville and finally the Pensacola scenes.
I'm told this film was found in a garage sale.

If you look closely at the P'Cola Beach scenes you'll notice at that time they apparently had a boardwalk of sorts which extended from the back of the Casino and then along the beach close to the water. Never knew that existed until seeing this.

Thanks from me too Bob. I sent the link to some family and friends. Utube can be great sometimes.

Pretty cool, and did you see how the sand was almost covering the picnic tables away from the water......no buildings to interfere with the migration of the sand.......

Sad. We managed to fuck up one of the most beautiful places on earth and turn it into the shit pile it is today.

I know we all hate everything about the local newspaper. But a lot of the credit for why that several miles between Portofino and Navarre Beach remains unspoiled goes to the newspaper's editor. Bowden began the campaign in 1965 to make that happen and saw it all the way through to it's becoming a reality in 1971.

Earl's contributions and the PNJ's will be the pristine beach which is between Navarre and PB......but sadly the westerly flow of sand has been choked off by the four mile Navarre development and the dunes are getting smaller and smaller, and the sand being pumped up is not the same......it is brown, coarser, and when combined with the broken asphalt looks like oreo cookies.....so no matter how high the intentions of Earl......the truth is the National Seashore is nothing more than a dirty looking Arizona flat land since Ivan..........and the continued inability of the National Park system to design and build a road which will not further spoil the sand.

I dunno. Sometimes yelladawg and I go out there and sit on the beach and marvel at the nature all around us. And I don't remember us ever thinking about any of that when we do, seaoat.
Maybe if that stuff gets worse which it probably will. But by then hopefully I won't be around to see it happen.

I guess that is where we differ. I know i should not, but sometimes when I go to Pensacola Beach, I see a once beautiful woman that has been disfigured in a horrible auto accident. Still a beautiful person but a shell of what she used to be. It did not have to be what it is.

I don't know that we differ. You're talking about Pensacola Beach. I'm talking about a place where Pensacola Beach is barely visible.

So far all I've ever done is immerse myself in that narrow piece of land between the road and the gulf. But the last time we were there I decided that before it's over I'm going to hike north across that road and get inside one of those dunes which in spots is a fur piece from the road. Where Pensacola Beach becomes not just barely visible but plumb invisible. And so does the road.

Hey I want to do in my old age what we could do in the sixties. That's when we could go inside the Sugar Bowl and you couldn't even see Pensacola Beach from there at that time. lol

But I don't know the rules. I don't even know if you're allowed to hike north to one of those dunes in the park. I guess the ranger will just have to arrest me. BUT, he'll have to catch me to do that. And I'm counting on "sequestration" to give me an edge with that. lol

Good luck, Bob. Take your camera....I want to see a picture of you surrounded by dunes. Cool

But right now I've got a different problem to deal with first. I've got a ticket to the Hangout Festival tomorrow. But I waited until today to buy a parking space in Gulf Shores and now they're all sold out. So I guess I'm gonna have to park in Foley and hitchhike to the Hangout.
Here I am a 64 year old geezer and now I'm gonna have to hitchhike to get into a crowd of about 50,000 20 year olds to see bands I never heard of. I must have been drunk when I bought the ticket is all I can say. But I aint gonna throw away a hundred bucks so I guess I'll have to go through with it. lol

You might be able to park on Hiway 59 (maybe near the Target store?) and ride the trolley/bus system. I was that way last year and there was parking spaces on 59. Or Load your bicycle LOL Good Luck.
ps Last year they parked a lot of the buses next to Arbys on Coast road right off Navy Blvd.

Are you talking about the shuttle that is operated by the festival to one of the designated parking lots. Because if so all that is sold out. Every lot and every shuttle ride.

Or are you talking about a "trolley/bus system" that is run by the community and not the festival operators? Because that may be the answer if so.

I saw Tom Petty about a year ago in Orlando.

His band, which was always one of the best rock bands around, is tighter than ever.

Have fun.
