Has anyone ever noticed...

...that a recurring theme in Sci-Fi books and movies is that the progressives create a utopia and lots of people end up wanting to escape said utopia?

Yes I have noticed that. Just as I've also noticed that about an equal amount of science fiction has the private corporate world taking over society and the protagonists in the story wanting to escape that too.

The whole basis of the Star Trek story is that, not only a "one-world government", but a government which ruled over a whole bunch of worlds ("The Federation of Planets"), provided a "utopia" for it's citizenry.
All Captain Kirk and his crew ever did was the bidding of that "government" and the virtue of that government was never questioned. lol

And there was a totally different twist in one of my favorite science fiction stories, "The Day The Earth Stood Still".
In that story, all the governments of Earth were portrayed as so corrupt and destructful, that a representative of all the other planets was sent to Earth to deliver the message "either you straighten up and fly right or we will be forced to turn your world into a burned out cinder".

But what is even more interesting is the same representative of those other planets also revealed that their governments had failed them too. And the solution they decided upon was to turn over control to "a race of robots". In other words that story was ass backwards to what was portrayed in "Terminator" and "Matrix" and a host of other science fiction stories. In those stories it's not the government of humans which is the antagonist but the same "robots" (artificial intelligence) that was deemed to be the benefactor in The Day the Earth Stood Still. lol

So basically sci-fi is whatever we can imagine we can make great or evil utopias since they only have to have a measure of reality we can do all sort of things and it will work in that sci-fi world.

We had UTOPIA the year was 1957...then it was gone...

I think the whole idea of a utopia is dependent on one's perspective.

As Bob pointed about the Federation in Star Trek being one idea of a utopia. However there were problems even there when it came to the people/government agreeing on things.
