Watching the SCOTUS confirmation hearings, and wow, they can’t quit it.
These are the same people who champion a man who bragged about sexually assaulting women, was credibly accused of multiple rapes including of a minor, and paid hush money to a pornstar.
And, they’re all hot and bothered that this distinguished judge didn’t send offenders to prison for long enough.
Incredible.

They're playing to their QAnon cult... and are basically admitting that's really all that's left of their party now -- a cult of mentally ill people who are obsessed with conspiracy theories.
The QAnon cult sees child predators everywhere (except, of course, in their own churches, which are about as close to the child-sex cabals as they're ever actually gonna find), most of their weird myths are about them, so that's what the Republican officials are playing on.
The QAnon freaks have gotten so insane about this that they're cheering for Vladimir Putin because they believe that the entire country of Ukraine is a pedophile-trafficking hub and Putin's cracking down on them. They've become so crazy that my extremist right-winger co-worker is actually getting alarmed at her friends now and ranting to me that they're stupid and crazy. She still likes Trump, overall, but I never expected her to wise up enough to see that a lot of the company she's keeping is even crazier and stupider than she is. And she's still very, very stupid and crazy.
Anyway, that's what they're playing to with all the "pedophile" stuff, just feeding the QAnon freaks some red meat because they're actually dependent upon them now. Like Margie The Moose said, idiots like her aren't the fringe of the Republican party anymore -- the crazies are the base of the party now.
(Just so it doesn't drive anybody else crazy, I figured out how to type in "я русский агент" so I could translate it -- it means "I am a Russian agent." )
The QAnon loons don't really care about pedophiles or they wouldn't support Gym Jordan who turned a blind eye to it, or Matt Gaetz who's engaged in it, or Roy Moore, or Josh Duggar, or... you name it. Right up to Donald Trump his damnself. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/donald-trump-rape-case_n_581a31a5e4b0c43e6c1d9834 It's all just something to get them outraged and stirred up and believing anything. It's just a really good smear, because pedophiles are scum. But they're trivializing a serious issue by turning it into conspiracy theories. To hear them tell it, you'd think two out of every three people are kiddie-fiddlers.
I hate pedophiles as much as anybody, for general reasons as well as because an old girlfriend of mine was a victim of her sick dad and I see how she's suffered because of it. I've done a few of 'em bodily harm. As close as I've ever been to being a "disciple" of anybody, it's to this guy -- http://www.vachss.com/index.php -- may he rest in peace. And I know "hiding in plain sight" when I see it. And anybody fighting to keep Matt Gaetz or Gym Jordan in office have zero fucking wiggle room.
Jackson wasn't as hard on 'em as I would be (I'd like to expand the death penalty to include 'em) but guys like Hawley are misrepresenting situations to play to a lunatic base that is, sadly, the GOP's life support system at this point. It's not a party for sane people anymore. There just aren't enough of 'em left. And when they're even losing people like my crazy co-worker, they really ought to pump their brakes. But they aren't. They can't, really. Decade after decade of increasingly crazy levels of rhetoric has radicalized almost the entire party into a cult.
Case in point: right before I came here this morning, I checked out an old book blog a (former) friend of mine runs. The guy fell down a right-wing looneytoon rabbit hole when Trump got elected and now the poor bastard can barely function. His book reviews are mostly screaming diatribes about how scary the world is to him now and link after link to a conspiracy website that even Mark Levin -- Rush Limbaugh's protegee -- referred to as a "kook site." I tried to steer this guy back into talking about books, but he can't anymore. He's obsessed to the point of sickness. He's just gone. It's a bummer, but this fervor is clearly akin to religious mania now. It throws a hysterical, enraged shadow over every damn thing they do. And it makes them crazy. For instance, this guy's saying that Dirty Harry was the bad guy in Magnum Force because he stopped the cops from killing whoever they want. I mean, when a Dirty Harry movie starts looking like "liberal propaganda" to somebody, they need some fuckin' meds. Shovelfuls of 'em.

Always glad if I can turn anyone on to his stuff. He was a great writer, and had a great mission. If you like hardboiled crime stuff it seldom gets much better than him. I have a book I write quotes in and a good portion of them are from him.
