John D. loved him some Florida, and he raged against shoddy building codes and corner-cutting and stuff that he thought was ruining it. That book's all about it, but it shows up in Travis McGee novels, too. Sometimes he'll have Travis just go off on a rant about overdevelopment and dangerous corner-cutting. I'm not sure how much of that was involved in this condo's case -- sometimes people can do their best and still shit happens -- but obviously something went wrong. It's a good thing other buildings are getting rigorously inspected now that people got spooked. It's just awful that it took such a tragedy to make 'em do their due diligence.

Very cool to know that you, too, z, were thinking about Condominium (I guess probably a lot of folks were, but still), and also that you've read John D. MacDonald, one of my all-time favorite authors.  You can't be all bad!!
