I don't think the police should leave the road/pavement in their patrol car in pursuit of a runner unless they are in hot pursuit of a known dangerous person.

I agree....couldn't get the video to play but I agree.

All avoidable if he had not ran.

I also agree that it was unavoidable if he had not ran.  It's not so much the "runners" I sympathize with, it's the safety of innocent bystanders.  In the video, the patrol car is going through what looks like someone's back yard, at night, in the pitch dark.   That's where he hit and ran over the runner.

Try this You Tube video Joani. This one plays with the edited portion of the moment of impact. If it bothers you to watch a person die right before your eyes, then I would not watch it.

If the police are hell bent on catching someone, they need to stop their car and pursue on foot if the runner starts cutting through yards and such. That's what I think, anyway.

This dead runner's family is going to end up with a lot of money in this case. It shouldn't have happened.

Yes he plowed into him, however I'm not making excuses for the cop, but from the video it appears that the suspect fell down and the cop could not get stopped in time.

Like other have said cops should not chase suspects with the cruisers in yards or gardens. Responsibility though falls on both the cop and the suspect. This suspect got killed for what seems like nothing more than a seat belt infraction.

I think you're right, Ghost.  I don't think he intended to run over him.  Not that his intentions matter a whole lot.
