1 flood damage is extensive on 9/16/2018, 11:42 am

This is the fourth flood we have had on the islands this year. Since 1910 this has never happened. Eight out of the top ten flood events have happened since we owned the islands 13 years ago. We need to fix this gaping hole on the first causeway or we cannot fix any of the other damaged causeways. Climate change is for real, and we are going to just have to change our protocols on repairing the causeways. It is all going to be very expensive, but we must concrete our road system in vulnerable areas. This is the fourth time this year we are repairing roads and causeways and we now just have to concede that flooding is normal and no longer the exception and as a result we will need to harden areas we never thought would be damaged repeatedly.

That's called weather... and it's perfectly natural for rivers to wander. You're the problem.

No the problem is floods and climate change. These islands have been used since the 1840s and there never has been this much flooding. We are fortunate that the house is on high ground and not in the FEMA flood panels, but the farmer who farmed part of the islands since 1942 said he would have a lost crop once in five years, now it would be no crops for the last six years. The ice is melting and the water has to go somewhere.

Surface damage is repaired with mortar mix which binds some of the large chunks of concrete and gravel. We will fix the hole wed. I need to go to Northwestern Monday. We will show photos of the second causeway damage. We have full maple trees on top of the causeway. two days of chain sawing in my weak condition, then I will push them off with the bobcat. What a mess. We are so tired of seeing the impact of climate change and so many oblivious of what is coming. We will lose close to four thousand dollars just in the repairs on the causeways not to mention the removal of trees lying all over the islands.

i forgot to get a before photo on the main causeway with all the trees, but wife got up early knowing I was not feeling well and chain sawed into pieces, and I was able to get into the bobcat just now and push the large logs into the river. All causeways are clear, but extensive concrete work is needed on the repairs. We will order three yards on Wed. and fill the remaining holes. No shovel or finishing work which I simply cannot do. Pour and fill. I will post a photo when we fill the big hole which I was able to push a end cap concrete traffic barrier into the hole which fit perfectly and will allow us to pour concrete into the hole without it spreading all over. I feel so bad for the people of SC and NC. I am only fixing roads and causeways, not my home. Floods suck.

$400 later we have poured six bag and mesh concrete into the bottomless hole in the first causeway. My wife did all the shoveling and got a great deal of help from the truck driver. They normally do NOTHING, but they have delivered for a decade now and I would always tip them for their help as they watched me get weaker. The truck driver, after the parking barrier slipped further down because of the wet concrete, he slipped a piece of plywood in to make a nice form. We will have to finish it in about a week, but all things considered the causeway is now passable.

The second causeway has four monster holes on the top, and rather than filling with gravel, we will put bags of dry concrete mix in the holes and add water and mix it up. We are considering concreting the main causeway which is 90 feet by about ten feet to eleven feed wide

To the detriment of the river and wildlife imo.

The river is just fine. It always wins. The wildlife have zero impact as there are five eight foot by twenty foot pipes which allow all wildlife to travel freely up and down the channel. The beavers will block tubes trying to raise a pool behind the causeways and we need to keep that debris out of the tubes per the state, but other than that the habitats have been the same for sixty years when the first causeway was built, and the dam and other causeways were washed away in the 1860s, but this channel has had structure on it for mills since the 1840s and is teaming with wildlife.

Well for the fifth time this year the islands will be entirely underwater next week. This is simply crazy. We are moving equipment, and tying down the porta potties.......I guess I can show you photos of how the new causeway holds up because not getting concrete poured on the edges probably will blow out the road. We will see how the culvert pipe works......oh well there are worse things happening somewhere. photos to come probably Friday.

We are simply the canaries in the mine for global climate change. Honestly, all the distractions from this core issue is a crime. Man is going to destroy this planet with co2 pollution, and maybe this is punishment for my total ambivalence toward the same. We are thinking we will take a road trip and just get the hell away from here because it turns our stomach that just four weeks after the last flood, we are facing another one. The 110 year flood records of this river have NEVER seen anything like this. Thankfully the house is way out of the flood zone, but heck at the rate it is going nothing will be safe.

Wouldn't blame you one bit for wanting to get away. Must be so very discouraging. But are you up to a trip?

As for personal punishment - nope. I guarantee you climate change doesn't even know your name.

I am most comfortable in the heated leather seats in the Prius. We will have the heater on in July as it really gives my liver some relief. So the travel in the car is actually very comfortable, but at the rate I am declining who knows. I would like to have lunch in Montreal in the old french quarter, I would like to go to Navuoo Illinois and visit the Mormon historical grounds, I would like to go to Gettysburg one more time, I would like to get a fresh Maine lobster and see the color of the trees change in the White Mountains, I would like to take the granddaughters to the state room of the Desoto hotel in Galena Illinois like I took their mother so they could look out the room window and see where Lincoln and grant spoke to the crowds below, I would like to visit Springfield and visit the Lincoln memorial, I would love to walk a creek bed in Keokok Ia and gather limestone geodes, I would like to visit Vicksburg and civil war battlefields, I would like to visit friends in Biloxi, I would like to see the grand canyon one more time, and go to a couple NBA games, I would like to go to Napa and stay in a guest house in a vineyard of a childhood friend of my wife, I would like to visit my cousins in San Diego, and brother in Phoenix. I would like to stop at every casino on the road which has a poker room and play poker for three or four hours before traveling to the next hotel and casino. I would like to watch the Bears live one last time.

I have told my wife if I die in the car......drive home and tell the coroner that she thought I was sleeping. I may be dying, but my travel dreams will be alive until my last breath.

Co2 is plant food. It's going to be ok poindexter. Fix Yellowstone if you feel froggy. It's a real threat.

Sea, I'm glad the heated seats are comfortable.   Seems there was a time when even that no longer helped, so this is good to hear.

Your travel dreams are wonderful.   I'm a shameless homebody who could travel but doesn't wish to these days....each to their own, I suppose.

The floodwaters have reached the islands. They will rise over the next five days and will take two weeks to clear the islands. The fall is the most enjoyable time, but not underwater. New causeway pipes and gravel have held up fine.....so far

Repairs are holding up on the first causeway. We expect two weeks underwater which means we will miss some of the nice color change on the islands in the fall. Oh, well we have the granddaughters sunday and monday and we are thinking about traveling to Galena and staying at the De Soto hotel which I recommend for anybody visiting Illinois. Galena has one of the best civil war museums in America and it is an architectural dream for kids to take in all the really cool buildings. Neighbor's retirement party tonight which I will probably have to pass and wife will go.....weakness is amazing. The docs have said I should be dead. I have set the record for hormone levels, and when I get up each morning......I simply smile.

What a mess. The river will rise another two feet this week to near record levels. The fifth flood this year. Folks........sell everything you have in florida and move to KY or TN. All but two of our properties sit on the water......we will be contacting a realtor. This global climate change is going to accelerate, and like getting off the beach, it is the timing. We need to simply leave Florida, and find high ground. An entire section of the road is blown out because I failed to get two more truck loads.......what a mess. PB and NB are going to become sand bars, and fifty years from now there will be no road structure on the island. It would take a massive investment and environmental approval to raise the main roadbed six feet with at least 30 feet of concrete culvert running under the entire length of the road which allowed the sand to migrate, and it would be a concrete road bed, not the park service intentionally turning the most pristine beach in to Oreo Cookie Beach.
