CNN’s Jim Acosta Warns Anti-Media Hostility Is Going To Get Someone Hurt

Go down  Message [Page 1 of 1]

“We should not treat our fellow Americans this way. The press is not the enemy.”

CNN’s Jim Acosta was met with a familiar scene on Tuesday at President Donald Trump’s rally in Tampa, Florida: shouting crowds and middle fingers.

Acosta, the outlet’s senior White House correspondent, shared a video of his encounter with the president’s supporters late Tuesday, including footage of rally-goers wearing shirts reading “Fuck the Media” and others screaming “stop lying.”

“Just a sample of the sad scene we faced at the Trump rally in Tampa,” Acosta wrote. “I’m very worried that the hostility whipped up by Trump and some in conservative media will result in somebody getting hurt.”

He continued: “We should not treat our fellow Americans this way. The press is not the enemy.”

If I'm running a scam to sell "magic beans" to idiots, any guy who goes around telling everybody "those beans aren't magic, they won't do anything, don't trade your cow to him" is my enemy.  And the people who bought the beans and don't want to feel stupid will gladly defend me and attack the dude who's trying to wise them up.  They'd rather believe in magic beans than face the truth that they've been duped.

Trump supporters hate CNN because CNN is telling them the truth instead of what they want to hear.  That makes them furious.   And the more their illusion gets threatened, the more dangerous they're going to get about it.

Trump supporters are so bogged down in bullshit that they're buying into full-blown crazy conspiracy theories at this point.  That rally was full of "QAnon" supporters.  If you've looked into that, it's complete Scientology-backstory-level lunacy -- https://www.thedailybeast.com/what-is-qanon-the-craziest-theory-of-the-trump-era-explained?via=twitter_page  -- but they're desperate to (A) view themselves as the enlightened, heroic rebel good-guys who have the "real truth" on their side, instead of idiots who fell for an obvious con-job, and (B) have the people they disagree with not only be evil, but insidious agents of Satan himself, and (C) think the whole world is secretly on their side, just working undercover.   They'll buy into anything that keeps them from facing the facts about what they've actually done, and who and what they are.

The same thing happened in Hitler's Germany.  The Nazi supporters went after "der luegenpresse" ("the lying press") because the press reported that the Nazis were bigoted and bad and fascist... and, of course, the Nazis wanted people to think that wasn't true.  But, history shows us what happened.   We're repeating that here, now, in America.  Hopefully we'll be able to stop it before it goes as far, but the reason what Trump's doing is so alarming to a lot of people is because some of us have read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and we've seen this pattern before.  Trump's not end-stage Hitler, nope, but he is awfully similar to late-20's era Hitler.  And a big chunk of our population are the same mindset as the ones who followed him... but, they angrily reject that idea.   Can't blame 'em for not likign the comparison, but it's still true nonetheless.

Yes, I guess this is a hot topic! I heard reporters saying yesterday that several of their colleagues have hired body guards just because many of the stories they cover involve going into situations like the rally in Florida yesterday where they are faced with scenes such as this.

This is not a new thing for the Trumpster. Recall that he had the press cordoned off behind crowd control barriers and then would point them out as basically bad people and encouraged his followers to loudly heckle them. In her book about the Trump campaign, Katy Tur wrote about feeling very threatened in those situations. A crowd can quickly become a mob especially under the very talented  demagog we have leading them.

NYT's editor tried to explain why his rhetoric is so inflammatory but he is just on his own power trip and would rather destroy our institutions than behave himself. He is following in the footsteps of Turkey's Erdogan, attack the press, "cleanse" the justice system and kill democracy.

Between his attacks on the press and the attacks on social media (from the Russian hackers) to cause more disruption in our civil discourse  we are really experiencing some serious assaults. We cannot panic. We must just continue to register people to vote and to turn out. This is extremely important.

It is going to get much worse before it gets better. He is a fascist who has little use for democracy, nor the courage to handle the press......a coward in every regard.
