The human rights office says the practice "amounts to arbitrary and unlawful interference in family life, and is a serious violation of the rights of the child."

byJessica Corbett, staff writer

The United Nations human rights office on Tuesday demanded that the Trump administration "immediately halt" its policy of tearing migrant children away from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border, declaring that the practice "always constitutes a child rights violation."

"Children should never be detained for reasons related to their own or their parents' migration status. Detention is never in the best interests of the child."
—U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for
Human Rights
Under the administration's so-called zero tolerance policy, unveiled last month by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, border agents separate children from their parents at the border and prosecute the adults. The approach, which is being framed as a deterrent to stop migrants from attempting to enter the country, has been widely denounced as "evil" and spurred protests from immigrant rights advocates.

Ravina Shamdasani, a spokesperson for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement on Tuesday that the office is "deeply concerned" by the U.S. government's decision to separate migrant families, arguing that the policy "amounts to arbitrary and unlawful interference in family life, and is a serious violation of the rights of the child."

"Children should never be detained for reasons related to their own or their parents' migration status. Detention is never in the best interests of the child," Shamdasani declared, noting that the practice seems to have been in effect since October and has been applied "to both asylum-seekers and other migrants in vulnerable situations."

"The child's best interest should always come first, including over migration management objectives or other administrative concerns," she continued, emphasizing that the policy "runs counter to human rights standards and principles."

"The majority of people arriving at the U.S.'s southern border have fled Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador—in many cases either because of rampant insecurity and violence, or because of violations of a range of other rights, such as health, education, and housing," she noted. "The U.S. should immediately halt this practice of separating families and stop criminalizing what should at most be an administrative offense."

Shamdasani also pointed out that although "the rights of children are generally held in high regard in the U.S., it is the only country in the world not to have ratified the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child." The convention explicitly states that children "should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love, and understanding," and has been active for nearly three decades.

How is this different from citizen parents breaking the law and being separated from their children by prison?

Oh the humanity. Rolling Eyes

And what ever happened w daca? The dems wanted 800k amnesty... trump offered 1.8M w border security.

It's hard to believe the left is actually sincere here. Is the issue political or humanitarian? Ya... we know.

Under Trump -- and his followers and spit-sucker-upper apologists -- America's quickly going from being seen as a "shining city on a hill" to a heartless, ugly cesspit. We're going to have a hell of a lot of reputation-rebuilding to do after Trump's out of office, and I really don't know what we're going to do with his voters. They're making Americans look like stupid, mean, shitty, worthless people, and any decent citizen should resent it.

The U.N.??? The most corrupt and inept institution ever contrived. What did the UN do about THEIR "peacemakers" who raped countless KIDS and women in Africa?

Ravina Shamdasani ought to look to her own country (China) with slave and near-slave labor and human trafficking on an unbelievable scale before wagging a hypocritical finger at the U.S..

It's sad when children are caught up in the results of their parents bad decisions but we are supposed to be a nation of laws. ICE has limited resources and limited facilities to process illegals so the end result is some families will inevitably be broken up.

Congress needs to get off their dead asses and come up with a solution for the kids who were born here and stuff the Trumpet.

People who want to come to this country need to do it legally or not at all. We need immigrants but not illegal immigrants.

President Trump Vows To Deport Puerto Ricans Back To Mexico

Charleston, West Virginia – President Trump yesterday called for all Puerto Ricans living in the United States and its territories to be deported and sent back to Mexico. He made this extreme statement while addressing a rally for embattled Republican Congressman Andrew Canard of West Virginia’s 33rd District.

Congressman Canard appeared shocked and confused when America’s commander-in-chief said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers should be working day and night to deport “MS-13 animals and all Puerto Ricans back to Mexico where they belong.” An anonymous source in Canard’s campaign reported several staffers had to talk him out of grabbing the microphone and tell the cheering crowd that Puerto Ricans are, in fact, United States citizens.

Meanwhile, Nikki Haley has egg on her face at the UN. In response to a Kuwaiti resolution condemning violence against Gaza, Haley dissented against the Kuwaiti resolution, wrote her own resolution based on Trump policy in the region, and couldn't get a single delegate to sign on.

Short bio: Republican South Carolina Governor Nimrata Nikki Randhawa Haley, better known as Nikki Haley, was born on January 20, 1972, in Bamberg, South Carolina, to Sikh immigrants from Punjab, India.

"U.S. Ambassador Nikki took a virtual beating at the United Nations meeting. The Twitter video below via Now This News shows Haley begging other ambassadors to sign her Trump/U.S. Gaza Resolution. At one point in the video, with hand over her heart, Haley appears to be asking one ambassador, “Oh, please.” But her attempts were to no avail leaving her in a very awkward situation. She then, in Trump style, tries to bully and threaten the entire U.N..

One ambassador said that he never, in the history of the U.N., had seen a resolution shot down the way Haley’s was. Here is the Now This video. With some videos, it’s easier to just read the transcript. I would recommend watching this one. It’s too good not to..."
