They'll scream "fake news!" and call Jimmy Kimmel some names, even though the proof's right in their faces and they could check it themselves.
Then, show them this:
Watch them shrug it off as easily as Trump does. Doesn't matter to them. As long as the hat says "Make America Great Again" they don't care if it's made in China. Trump gushes about "Made In America" all the time, but when he gets a chance to back that up himself, he doesn't.
Trump bragged about lying to Canada's leader:
President Trump made the shocking admission on Wednesday that he made up information during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
During a fund-raising speech in Missouri, Trump recalled contradicting Trudeau, who told him Canada didn’t have a trade deficit with the U.S. — even though he had “no idea” whether that was true.
Trump, who was raising money for Republican Senate candidate Josh Hawley, said, “I didn’t even know ... I had no idea. I just said, ‘You’re wrong.’ You know why? Because we’re so stupid ... And I thought they were smart,’” according to a recording obtained by the Washington Post.
“I said, ‘You’re wrong, Justin.’ He said, ‘Nope, we have no trade deficit.’ I said, ‘Well, in that case, I feel differently,’ I said, ‘but I don’t believe it.’ I sent one of our guys out, his guy, my guy, they went out, I said, ‘Check, because I can’t believe it,’” Trump said.
“‘Well, sir, you’re actually right. We have no deficit, but that doesn’t include energy and timber. … And when you do, we lose $17 billion a year.’ It’s incredible,” Trump went on to say.
Show that to a Trump supporter, and they'll shrug it off as "business," or claim it's "fake news," etc.
The truth is, they want to be scammed, and they'll fight anyone who tries to wise them up.
It's time to stop looking at the Republican party as a political party, and look at them as a cult. They coalesce around their central authority figure, who is staunchly defended and not questioned. Anyone who does question him is branded an enemy and attacked. If a member of the cult questions him, they're outcast (called a "RINO" or whatever). Doubting him, or failure to defend him, is punishable... especially at the top, which is why Trump purges his cabinet so often. He demands strict loyalty and discourages independent thinking -- you toe the "MAGA" line, you defend Trump no matter what, or, you're out.
Us-vs.-them mentality is encouraged and enforced; they rail against "libtards" constantly, and that pretty much includes everyone who doesn't agree with them completely or questions their leader. They magnify enemies and try to make them seem a threat to the entire world (the hilarious fears about antifa, for instance, who they simultaneously mock as a bunch of "weak soy-drinking vegans" and claim are a "bigger threat than ISIS"). All ideologies other than theirs are immediately driven to their most extremes -- they're never dealing with Democrats, they're always dealing with "socialists" or outright Communists and then you hear all the horrors of Stalin. It would be laughable if so many of them didn't actually believe that was reasonable, rational argument. Their political enemies aren't just people they disagree with... they disagree with everything that's good. They "hate America." They even hate God.
So, even if you don't like the cult very much, you have to stay in it, because if you step out of it, The Big Bad will eat you up. Everyone else is worse! Satan's gonna get you for doubting.
There's also an isolationist thing. Trump's very into that. It's why he likes to build walls. He likes rallies where he can cast out dissenters (preferably on a stretcher). He creates bastions like FOX News where never is heard a discouraging word... and every other place is fake and bad and trying to trick ya.
This is all very basic cult stuff, straight out of Eric Hoffer. This book, written a long time ago, will still nail it all down right now: https://www.amazon.com/True-Believer-Thoughts-Movements-Perennial/dp/0060505915/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1521124116&sr=1-1&keywords=eric+hoffer
Basically, a lot of these Trump supporters are on him tighter than an ardor-filled dog humping someone's leg, and nothing will pry them off, no amount of proof, no amount of sanity. You'll have as much luck convincing a Scientologist that Xenu is bogus. It's all willful and not based on anything rational in the first place.
Even if they do admit that, "Okay, he lied there," they'll still claim everything else he does is the truth. They'll build the wall, the Russia thing's a hoax, and even if it's not a hoax it's legal, and it's a good thing to do, and here's-Hillary-bullshit-rumor-#738-as-if-that-justifies-anything, etc. They refuse to acknowledge a pattern, because they want to believe. And Trump knows it, which is why he doesn't even TRY to stop lying. When he said he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose a vote, he meant it.
They've been trained. It's got far more to do with a religion-type thing than a politics-type thing now, because it's all about faith and belief in a god-figure who can't be question and who'll do right because that's what gods do. FOX News and talk radio are their church now. If you watch a guy like Hannity, he's more televangelist than reporter. He even couches things he says in the Biblical terms his viewers are used to ("let not your heart be troubled") to draw them into that same mindset.
Trump's statement about lying to Trudeau would be a major scandal for any other president or any other party, but watch it get shrugged off again because the cult has been trained to just accept this stuff. We look at North Korea's governing as a creepy thing, but we're on the same road... the main difference being that half the country ain't buyin' the "dear leader" bullshit. And boy, do they hate us for it.
