1 WTF on 2/24/2018, 3:34 pm

I have seen all these stories about the US winning the curling event in the Olympics as they squeeze out stories about guns, children's deaths, and politicians and I have come to the conclusion that America is tilted. A dealer in Metropolis could not stop talking about how cool curling was and then proceeded to explain to everybody at the table how important the brooms are and how much strategy was involved. He literally said the event took his breath away. I sat there, like John belushi wanting to destroy that guitar on the stairways in Animal House........but I knew if I did, I would probably be forced to leave the table and go to my room. I have thought maybe it is cultural difference between regions of the country, but I am beginning to think we are in a zombie take over where if I close my eyes I will become one of them. Children die, bridges fail, politicians lie, clowns threaten nuclear war, Russians control our government, the wealthy steal, and in 1990 11% of the homeless were over 50 but today 50% are over fifty as the IRA's the Reagan administration promoted are empty and traditional pensions were broken as the companies stole the same and then moved to Viet Nam where we wasted trillions trying to fight the communist threat as China became one of our biggest trading partners stealing more American jobs............but at least we have curling.

No one likes to be told to chill out but sometimes it's a necessity in order not to go stark raving mad.

Look, Sea, you're objectively correct that things are pretty terrible right now - your examples are depressingly valid -- yet, no matter what's going on in the nation or the world we still continue to watch and appreciate our sports and other relatively 'meaningless' diversions as we always have -- and, though I share your incredulity about curling's attraction, there are obviously many people who're really into it, as it's been played for centuries through many world upheavals. (After all, curling originated in Scotland in the 16th century, if you didn't know. It's way older than assault rifles.)

So each to their own ways of coping and grabbing a bit of happiness, yes? I mean, some might ask how you can sit there for hours totally absorbed in playing poker when the country is falling down around you...what's the diff??

Then there's the other big picture/small picture example, which is the stark reality that your life is gradually ebbing away but you can still enjoy a burger and a long afternoon nap -- and thank goodness for that.

How could anyone not like curling, especially Women's Curling? It's women with brooms, for godssakes! What could be better than watching that--women performing the one task they're congenitally suited for?

Well, maybe not the ONE task...     but still, it's pretty high on the list.

I find curling to be offensive to be included in any Olympic games. I find the winter games to be cultural x games, and after listening to Wayne's NRA World where he attacked the NFL and the NBA........I got the appeal of these games to some people......the answer is obvious. Chill out, I am very serious when I say I am utterly disgusted with the coverage of this chit. Might as well have bull fighting in the summer Olympics.

And personally I find your attitude toward curling completely baffling, and the conflation with the NRA remarks even more bizarre.  And bull fighting??   WTF kind of comparison is that??

Bull fighting is a cultural event. When I lived in Mexico, I was told that Americans just do not understand the beauty of a bull fight and the incredible athleticism and hand eye coordination. If the Mexicans decided to have the spring olympic games and included bull fighting, it would make as much sense as Norway, Sweden, and Denmark having winter games with cultural non athletic competition. The NRA comments were the most racist dog whistle chit that I have heard in years........after attacking the NBA and NFL they then talked about socialism, like football and basketball are no longer white man sports and they have thugs in the same who do not respect our country. At the same time I am seeing a group of white people at a casino talk about curling like it was athletic competition.......hell they would rather watch white people create a game which involved snowball rolling than to watch real athletes who happen to be culturally different or who have a different color than this strange viewership of the Winter Olympics.

Now that we know that the Mexicans have the spring Olympics, we need to set up the fall Olympics. I would suggest that it be African games, like blow darts, spear throwing, barefoot running, and mud hut building.......however we all know that the fall and spring olympics will get no sponsors or viewership from the majority of Americans.

Bizarre is in the eye of the beholder. I find curling to be a bizarre cultural event which has absolutely nothing to do with athletic competition, yet somehow has become an Olympic game which appeals to white people. Just my observations. Politics often at its root is simple cultural tensions.

At least Curling has some kind of objective scoring, unlike silly-ass competitions like Ice Dancing and Freestyle Skiing.

There are more lawn bowlers in America. Are we going to have lawn bowling as a sport. I used to go to a friend's Tiger club where they had over a hundred lawn bowlers........how about shuffle board? It is like I would suggest ice break dancing for the winter olympics........oh no.....not culturally consistent with a handful Northern European nations who got double the medals of the United States of America after spending almost a hundred million on these athletes. Our President and his make America great again agenda made it clear he wanted more Norwegians to come to America and not people from chit hole countries......all the medal winning winter game nations qualify......are you still having a problem with how bizarre my posts have been? Curling......please wake me up from this nightmare.

Now, I suppose, you're going to spew a hate-filled rant about Belgian Feather Bowling AKA The Sport of the Gods.

How much of the Winter Olympics have you watched?

72% 1 hour daily or less
15% 1-2 hours daily
10% 2-4 hours daily
3% More. I can’t get enough

Msn poll, and you can bet that probably 50% never watched a minute and the crazy three percent need to be institutionalized. I just simply do not get the games anymore. In the nineties we got all kinds of American hot dogging events in the Olympics but we got 23 golds for a 100 million dollars. This is insanity.

How crazy are you if you spend a nano-second worrying--or even thinking--about how many people are watching the Olympics?

72% Off the deep end, needs to be institutionalized
15% Somebody get a net
10% Right on the edge
3% Not quite certifiable

Because I am afraid of an invasion of Norwegians now that curling has become the national sport, and Trump and the NRA have open warfare with the NBA and the NFL and all those people who came from chithole countries.

Priceless! An NFL star sees the light.

Of course, he's probably been brain-damaged from the repeated concussions he endured in the so-called "sport" of American football--which is actually just a disgraceful glorification of violent aggression.

College football should come in for particular opprobrium, it's a national disgrace. Can you image any of the great universities around the world--universities like Cambridge, Oxford or the Sorbonne--making such a big deal about sports teams?

It's a stupid "sport" anyway, a three-hour game might have 18 minutes of actual game play. What a pathetic excuse for a "sport".

I'll admit that I don't "get" curling. It's an item on a long, long list of bizarre-to-me human activities that I do not understand, along with listening to Celine Dion, wearing neckties, thinking pogs are fun, going to church, or having hot-dog-eating contests. But, I'm not offended by it. If people enjoy it, cool. Lucky them, they have something extra fun to do/watch that I don't.

And, yep, the world does have massive problems, but dwelling on them to the exclusion of all else won't help anything. If people want to use some of their time seeing how far an object can slide on ice, that's okay... a distraction can be good. I don't think it'll save any lives or fix anything if they decided not to slide things. It's not either-or...

And THAT, as opposed to Seaoat's sad and rather small-minded judgmentalism here, is clearly the wiser attitude. Good for you, z.

As for not understanding curling, as with most things that's probably the number one cause of criticism. I certainly don't love the sport but have watched enough to realize there's a helluva lot more to it than just "seeing how far an object can slide on ice." (And yes, I presume you really know that.) From what I can see, it's more like a forward-thinking, complex chess game, except with the added complication that you can't always control exactly where your piece lands.

Yeah, it seems to be kind of like shuffleboard, with a bit of extra friction-control to it. In any case, it's harmless, and no weirder than some other sports. Smile

Didn't one of the curlers test positive for dope. Hopefully not another Russian.

Yep, it was a Russian curler, who had to return his bronze medal.   There was another Russian, a female bobsleigh rider, also accused of doping though she's denied it.

Both incidents apparently helped convince the IOC to recommend against the Russians' being able to march behind their country's flag in the closing ceremonies.
