In America

In America we send our children off to school to be slaughtered.
In America we send our thoughts and prayers as anesthesia for our sins.
In America we learn geography by ballistic pain: Sandy Hook – Columbine – Virginia Tech – Pulse Nightclub – Isla Vista – Las Vegas – Red Lake – Umpqua – Oikos – Casas Adobe – Marjory Stoneman Douglas – and tomorrow’s grief yet to be plotted on the GPS of death.
In America our right to bear arms often devastates our right to bear children.
In America life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness dies at the end of a gun barrel.
In America our love of guns overpowers our love for one another.
In America evil has become normalized.
In America the word gun rhymes with numb.
In America our hearts are full of pain. Again.
In America today, our Valentine was a bullet.
In America we have the right to remain silent.
And so it goes.

Dear American Children,
We love you. You are the future. If you're like us, you've wondered how relevant school is to 'real life'. I guess that question has a definitive answer now.
Use math to keep a body count. Economics can inform your understanding of the profit motive that drives gun manufacturers. Health class can suggest survival strategies around a locked and loaded second amendment activist.
If we still taught Civics you might learn about the moral cowardice of Congress or the perversity of a lobbying group like the NRA. So sorry there was no mental health program for the shooter. Sorry we don't let the CDC study the causes or effects of gun violence. Sorry we can't afford to put safety glass in your school but .. tax cuts.
There's no gun legislation in the pipeline, even though three of America's deadliest shootings have taken place in the last two years. The number and severity seem to be escalating. But Dad and I have got our eye on an adorable bullet proof vest and social media will help you deal.
And girls, follow the boys, as God intended. Their first person shooter experience will be invaluable.
Prepare for the 'enhanced media experience' because apparently now it's okay to talk to kids even when their parents aren't present, to ask you if you saw any bodies, or if you think some of your friends might be dead, even when you cry. Be prepared to watch the replays.
"Thoughts and prayers" yada yada,
America
