Ruben Gallego: Why we should not build Trump's border wall

Could a wall be built? What would it do? Journalists from the USA TODAY NETWORK flew and drove the entire length of the U.S.-Mexico border in search for answers. This is what they found. A USA TODAY NETWORK video production.

Congressman: The biggest problem with Donald Trump's border wall is that it was never about border security.

Donald Trump promised a “big, beautiful wall” on the campaign trail. He promised it would be an impenetrable concrete wall, running the full 2,000 miles along the southern border.

And Trump promised Mexico would pay for it.

All of those promises are falling apart. Trump now admits the wall might only run 700 miles or less, and it will have openings to allow border patrol to see through to the other side. And now that Mexico has made it abundantly clear that they won’t pay for it, he’s asking the American taxpayer to pony up.

But those aren’t the biggest problems with Trump’s border wall.

The wall isn't about border security

The biggest problem is that the wall was never about border security.

Donald Trump’s wall is about dividing Americans – playing upon the racial fears and anxiety he has drummed up and amplified to rally his base. Trump’s wall is a political campaign promise that he has to fulfill to keep his base happy.

Trump’s border wall is trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. Border apprehensions have been falling for years, and the border wall will do nothing about the real issue of visa overstays.

The wall is a giant waste of money, and there are countless ways to better invest the tens of billions of dollars we would waste on a wall.

For example, U.S businesses are feeling the negative effects of lengthy delays at ports-of-entry caused by insufficient staffing.

Fortunately, there’s a solution. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, we could boost our economy by $2 billion simply by hiring 1,000 new customs officers – and we could do it for a fraction of the cost of Trump's wall.

You know we can't build the wall there

Let’s be clear. The idea of building 2,000 miles of wall through remote, arid sectors of the U.S.-Mexico border is ridiculous. Such places saw few unauthorized crossings even before net undocumented immigration from Mexico dropped to around zero.

It’s so self-evidently ridiculous that even Trump's own budget request doesn't come close to asking for the amount of money that would actually be required to build it.

At its heart, Trump’s wall seeks to prey on the fears of Americans made anxious by decades of social and demographic change, and seeks to spread the dangerous notion that immigrants are a threat to the American way of life.

It’s a false notion, belied by two centuries of history in which successive generations of immigrants from all corners of the world have risked it all to come to America, to work hard, provide for their families, contribute to their communities – and, yes, to make America great.

This is just a monument to himself

This is who Donald Trump is and what he does. As a businessman, he started his career refusing to rent his apartments to African-Americans, so the Justice Department sued him.

As a national political figure, he launched his career by peddling a racist "birther" conspiracy about the first black president.

As a presidential candidate, he began his campaign by attacking Mexican immigrants as criminals and rapists and kept the show going by attacking a federal judge of Mexican-American descent in a way that Speaker Paul Ryan described as “the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

Donald Trump has spent his entire life trying to sow racial division to advance and enrich himself. This is no different. That’s why he refused to denounce in unequivocal terms the white nationalism we saw on open display in Charlottesville. That’s why he continues to push a wall that will do nothing for border security but will spread fears about immigrants and divide us as Americans.

Let’s get serious by recognizing that Donald Trump’s border wall idea is not serious.

It's absolutely a monument to himself. Trump doesn't give a damn about the border one way or another. All he cares about is that the people who hate Mexicans like him. And that's what it's really about -- hatin' Mexicans. Yeah, I know, they say "it's only LEGAL immigration we're against... if they come in the legal way, fine!" But if that were true, they'd be bucking to make legal immigration easier. Right now it often takes a decade or two for people to be allowed in. That's fucking ridiculous. It shouldn't take anyone ten years or more to be cleared for entry into the country. If you want to cut down on illegal immigration -- and, who doesn't? -- then make the legal process saner and easier. A background check to buy a fuckin' machinegun is a matter of days. And I'm not saying legal immigration has to become that fast, because we should do background checks, but... months, not years. It can be done. Hell, it'll create jobs, checking in immigrants. Get more people on it.

And as far as this "merit-based" stuff goes... damn near everybody I've met that spouts that line is really lucky it hasn't been applied to them, because most of 'em can't spell six words in a row, much less isolate the Higgs bosun particle. If we expand that merits-based thing, they're gonna be the first ones on the boat, so, skip it.

Trump just knows he's got an ugly, nasty, dumb base, because who else is going to fall for him? He's trying to bask in their love, and he wants a monument they can look at and hang his name on. That's all he really cares about. And they want it because it's a spiteful monument to I-got-mine-fuck-you, which makes them feel superior somehow.

Here's what Trump could do, and I can pretty much guarantee he'd get away with it for at least 85% of his base -- build 100 yards or so of a wall, take a picture of it, tell the flipperheads that their stupid wall is completed, and then sit back and listen to 'em roar in glee like a headcase who found half a lollipop in the street. That's really all it'd take. None of 'em would investigate it any deeper than they look into their secret FBI cabals or pizza-shop sex rings or birth-certificate intrigue. Trump's got a base made up of children who like to be told stories. He could save billions on a wall and just LIE TO 'EM! It works! Sean Hannity's got a hundred million dollar deal out of doing that junk. They don't care, they're the same people televangelists have been shearing for decades now, they're not gonna wise up anytime soon. Tell them there's a wall, they'll totally believe it. Hell, you don't even have to build anything, just CGI the sumbitch. Have some dragons on the other side attacking it, most of 'em will believe that, too. They think the world's 6000 years old and every animal fit into an ark... you cannot underestimate the gullibility of these folks. I mean, Jesus, you already have Franklin Graham telling 'em it's okay to cheat on your wife with porn stars, they're granting "mulligans" for that now... they're not going to hock a loog in the face of Christ over that and balk at believing a wall story. They will not check the data, they won't verify a damn thing. So he should just do it. If CNN says "There is no wall," they'll shrug that off, too. It's who they are.

This is from one of my HS friends, a retired attorney who lives in Brownsville, TX:

Keeping the government open should be mandatory. Government by radio talk show host must end.

Six hundred fifty miles of the Southern border are already fenced. That fence should be maintained.

There are 250 miles of the southern border where the pros say fencing is an economical aid. Most of that mileage is over private land and bird and butterfly sanctuaries. Further, the river is snakey, and fencing will fence US citizens from access to large tracts of their own property. Finally, fencing will not have an impact on drugs or terrorists. Those representations are lies.

So let’s open the government and start dealing with the real situation. Fencing is fine, but it has marginal value and imperils private property rights.

The President can make do without his wall. He can find another way to peddle hate and division. He just has to find the courage to stand up to Limbaugh and Ingram.

Today both pieces of legislation to open the government - one including money for the stupid, useless wall, and one not -- died in the Senate. Now the word is that Pelosi is working on yet another bill that will spell out in distinct detail exactly what border security measures the House is willing to fund. I think that's a great idea, because I think most Americans not hopelessly besotted with the fool in the White House will urge their Congressional representatives to approve such a bill if it makes a lot more sense than new wall funding -- which it obviously will. Go Nancy!!!
