⚠️FORECAST UPDATE: Expect A Bitter Cold Start To 2018!

⬇️A much colder airmass will move into our region on New Years Eve with a prolonged period of much below normal temperatures expected to remain in place thru at least Friday of next week. Overnight lows will be especially cold with all but the immediate coast areas likely dipping into the low to mid 20s each night. Even along the immediate coast some temperatures in the upper 20s will be possible. The coldest temperatures should occur Monday night (early Tuesday morning) & Tuesday night (early Wednesday morning) - temperatures will fall into upper teens to near 20°F for interior southeast MS and areas west of I-65/north of Hwy 84 in southwest AL with 20s expected down to the coast. Overnight lows will continue to fall into the low to mid 20s over interior areas each night Wednesday thru Friday with low 30s along and just inland from the coast. Daytime highs will likely be substantially below normal, struggling to make it out of the 30s on New Years Day. Highs on Tuesday will only rise into the upper 30s to mid 40s across the region.

☃️WIND CHILL temperatures will be brutal on New Years Day morning and continue through mid to late week. The "feel like" temperatures could dip as low as the single digits at times north of Highway 84 in Alabama and over most of interior southeast Mississippi from early New Years Day morning through Tuesday night. Winds will be a little less gusty later in the week, but Wind Chill values will likely still range from the upper teens to the upper 20s.

☔️❄️There will be a chance of light precipitation across the region late Saturday night continuing through Sunday evening as the cold airmass arrives. This precipitation will be mainly in
the form of a cold rain across much of our area. However, there
is still some potential that a brief period of a wintry mix (light freezing rain and sleet) could occur over a small portion of
our northwestern counties, primarily near Choctaw County in AL, from late Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. Any wintry precipitation is expected to end by late Sunday evening. NO ACCUMULATION are currently expected.

It is bitterly cold in Illinois. Have the grandsons for the weekend and there will be NO outdoor activities. The river was still open water a week ago.....no more. We had an ice jam last year where the state had to use dynamite to break up an ice jam. They happen so fast and if the conditions are right, it builds a dam which causes flooding. We were in Florida last year when it happened, but we had huge chunks of ice on the islands in April.

It's been in the negatives up here. I think I'll go see the Grand canyon in a few weeks.

We have the granddaughters for the night and we have no plans to go outside. It is bitter cold. We will play OUI bowling this afternoon.

The small ceramic electric heaters are the Cat's meow for these really cold days. I have one by my chair, but as soon as I walk on the floor.....yikes......it is cold out there.

We rarely leave the heat on....usually just on long enough to get the chill off.

There's a school of thought that says that's actually more expensive, since the unit has to work harder to re-warm all the surfaces in the house every time you turn it back on.

Presumably there've been studies to prove or disprove this theory, but haven't looked for them.

We moved to Florida largely to escape the New England cold (and snow/ice) which were all that much more uncomfortable for my husband due to his heart meds, so are not interested in being chilly down here. Our heat stays on at a reasonable level.

Stay warm Linda and happy new year to you and yours.

Thanks, Tel, and same good wishes back to you and yours.

I should add that we do turn the heat down some at night, and wear warm clothing around the house.  We're not THAT wasteful, in case anyone was thinking so.     Wink

Didn't think that at all....it is a personal preference. We like it to be colder than most. On cool or colder nights we have the window cracked a little. On freezing nights we have the window closed and the thermostat on 64-65.

Just too damn cold. I am ready to head to Arizona or Florida as soon as I feel better. My walking is unsteady, and there is ice everywhere. I need to get out of here before I fall.

My brother and two of his daughters with children are in Arizona. I would like to visit my cousins in San Diego as my oldest cousin just died of breast cancer. We have real good friends who have rented a home on a mountain which has a guest home which we have been invited to Scottsdale. However, my business partner's wife was just taken to intensive care, and we wanted to visit them, but may have to wait until next month to make the Az trip, assuming she will recover. It will be a flip of the coin on Sunday where we go. I am declining rapidly, but the idea of walking outside without ice is enough for me to want to go today.

It's warmer today than it's been all week, and sunny. We do have rain in the forecast, though, but temps are expected to rise. Come on down!

This is the first time in five years we have not left for Florida in November and December. It is now the beginning of the second week of January, and I am already tired of winter. The view from the back deck may look beautiful, but everything is ice and every venture outside is risking a slip and fall. Not good conditions for those who are ill or unsteady on their feet.

Started getting chilly this afternoon. Hopefully, it will not get too cold. I am very happy to have walked and picked up some live oak branches which fell over the last ten months since I was last down. Good wind this afternoon to keep a fire going, but it started getting cold, so we called it a day and went out to eat with relatives who are passing through. I am hoping to have the energy to chainsaw this weekend as trees and branches I cut last year are great burning this year.

As you will have noticed by now, it's the wind that'll get you. Be careful. Glad you got some branches picked up, though. Every little bit helps!

In the Summertime it's not the heat it's the humidity. In the Wintertime it's not the cold it's the wind chill. Smile

You got it, Tel. Smile

Also, here on the coast, the wind is a curse in winter, but a blessing in summer.
