I just saw the President of the United States spend a half hour patting himself on the back, and at one point he quantified it.....you know in Katrina they lost thousands, and we only lost 16 people in Puerto Rico. I barely made it to the restroom.

Sadly, given his mental illness, it's probably the best he can do. But it's still revolting.

The guy should never have been allowed anywhere near the presidency. 19% of the people in this country made a big mistake voting for this embarrassment.

I'm hoping Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands will get the help they need despite his pettiness and delusions, but I'd hate to be dependent on him for anything. It's impossible for him to get interested in anything except himself and praise. I don't think he was born with much compassion to begin with (a lot of his problems are chemical) but that monster dad of his bred whatever did make it through out of him. He shouldn't be in charge of any humanitarian crisis.

The response to a humanitarian crisis is largely automatic... the president is a figure head for a few days.

It has become comical if it was not so deadly serious. I simply could not believe what I was seeing.....he was patting himself on the back as if he just shot a triple bogey on the hole and was asking for compliments on that last putt into the cup......it is pathological.

What exactly do you want? No one knew for certain what would happen.

Can you now predict hurricane paths?

I want staging for the American Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. I want assets moving to an area about to be hit with a cat 5 storm before it hits. A hospital ship being sent a week later is not a plan. I want transport for American citizens back to America before this tragedy of incompetence is compounded. Large cities are making arrangements for evacuees but there is NO transport. It is a cluster F, which at least with Katrina people could relocate to other cities....this crisis is reaching the boiling point and President Trump patting himself on the back is doing nothing to get people out and safe.

Wouldn't those concerns have been the priority there since... well... forever?

Humans used to be good at recognizing patterns and problem solving.

NEWS ALERT: There are inherent risks to living on islands and on coasts.

There... feel better?

Oh God. I actually was going to come on here and tell Seaoat to chill out for his own good, but I have CNN on my TV. Just as I started to post, Trump made the statement that people in Puerto Rico are throwing our budget out of whack.
He's a damnable SOB with not an ounce of compassion for any human being outside his own circle of family or friends.

He didn't say the people in Texas threw our budget out of whack, he didn't tell the people in Florida that we threw our budget out of whack, he only says that to an island filled with brown people.

He's amoral, totally without an ounce of good within him.
Hey, If I believed in the AntiChrist, I'd be pretty sure he's here already.

BTW Pkr- do you live in P'cola? I do.
The Gulf Coast is a Hurricane magnet. The Midwest is a Tornado alley. The west coast will fall off the Continent one day when the big one hits.

None of that means that when a disaster happens, the people living there deserve it because they took a risk by living there. Living ANYWHERE on this planet has its risks. People in Minnesota could freaking freeze to death.
I was born here FYI. That shocks a lot of folks who know my political views.
I don't ever plan to leave because I love my hometown regardless of the majority of its population. I'm sure not leaving due to any hurricane, not permanently anyway.
And when Ivan blew trees on my house, it was NOT my fault because I chose to live here. My government gave me a blue tarp, at the very least. Puerto Ricans are Americans, we owe them help.

No, I do not feel better. FEMA by design is to protect American citizens. Where are the transports to get people out when major cities have given invitations for tens of thousands. Luis Guiterrez said today that it takes three weeks to get an airline ticket which costs 900 dollars. Poor people getting the shaft from the government one more time. All the while ME ME ME ME in the 13 minute incredible puke video with the President patting himself on the back....this crisis is real. This is a failure.

Chill out.....I am fuming. I have never seen anything approaching such deplorable attention seeking and pats on the back then what this man has done down in Puerto Rico. How about kids will not be back in School for a year, and folks need to be evacuated......besides being a moron and insensitive he has pathological character flaws. ONLY 16 dead......OMG. You ought to see all the Anglos cheering for the President in a staged event.....I never heard so many white people praising the President in King's English.....where are some Puerto Ricans?

Seaoat, we can't do anything about Donald Trump right now. I promise you, you do not hate his guts one iota more than I do. I'm going to try not to have a stroke so that in one year and one month I can go to the polls and vote against every Republican on the ticket (except for our sheriff, who I will vote for.)
I hope you will still be around to vote in the next election too. Maybe that is the reason for all your anger today. You don't think you will be. I do have to say I think you are angrier today than I've normally seen you be.

Don't forget that Hillary WON the popular vote last year, so MOST Americans do not support this POTUS. We have the mechanism to take his power away and I believe we will, even if you are not able to make it to the polls. He won't be in office forever. If we can win next November, he WILL BE IMPEACHED and probably convicted. I have absolute faith that the young people in this country will vote next election and help get rid of him. I think the lesson of his election to them will be not to look around for a perfect candidate who has no chance to win. As long as I believe in the younger generation, I'm not going to let the likes of Donald Trump make me so angry I get sick from it. You shouldn't either.

It is beyond Trump....it is his followers and the insanity America has become. The truth is manipulated on facebook and by propagandist. All I think of is 1930 Germany and the fascists. Putin is evil, yet I truly believe he has hired guns within our government.

Trump’s Deadly Narcissism

Paul Krugman

According to a new Quinnipiac poll, a majority of Americans believe that Donald Trump is unfit to be president. That’s pretty remarkable. But you have to wonder how much higher the number would be if people really knew what’s going on.

For the trouble with Trump isn’t just what he’s doing, but what he isn’t. In his mind, it’s all about him — and while he’s stroking his fragile ego, basic functions of government are being neglected or worse.

Let’s talk about two stories that might seem separate: the deadly neglect of Puerto Rico, and the ongoing sabotage of American health care. What these stories have in common is that millions of Americans are going to suffer, and hundreds if not thousands die, because Trump and his officials are too self-centered to do their jobs.

Start with the disaster in Puerto Rico and the neighboring U.S. Virgin Islands.

When Hurricane Maria struck, more than a week ago, it knocked out power to the whole of Puerto Rico, and it will be months before the electricity comes back. Lack of power can be deadly in itself, but what’s even worse is that, thanks largely to the blackout, much of the population still lacks access to drinkable water. How many will die because hospitals can’t function, or because of diseases spread by unsafe water? Nobody knows.

But the situation is terrible, and time is not on Puerto Rico’s side: The longer this goes on, the worse the humanitarian crisis will get. Surely, then, you’d expect bringing in and distributing aid to be the U.S. government’s top priority. After all, we’re talking about the lives of three and a half million of our fellow citizens — more than the population of Iowa or metro San Diego.

So have we seen the kind of full-court, all-out relief effort such a catastrophe demands? No.

Admittedly, it’s hard to quantify the federal response. But none of the extraordinary measures you’d expect to see have materialized.

The deployment of military resources seems to have been smaller and slower than it was in Texas after Harvey or Florida after Irma, even though Puerto Rico’s condition is far more dire. Until Thursday the Trump administration had refused to lift restrictions on foreign shipping to Puerto Rico, even though it had waived those rules for Texas and Florida.

Why? According to the president, “people who work in the shipping industry” don’t like the idea.

Furthermore, although it’s more than a week since Maria made landfall, the Trump administration has yet to submit a request for aid to Congress.

And where’s the leadership? There’s a reason we expect visible focus by the president on major national disasters, including a visit to the affected area as soon as possible (Trump doesn’t plan to visit Puerto Rico until next week). It’s not just theater; it’s a signal about urgent priorities to the rest of the government, and to some extent to the nation at large.

But Trump spent days after Maria’s strike tweeting about football players. When he finally got around to saying something about Puerto Rico, it was to blame the territory for its own problems.

The impression one gets is of a massively self-centered individual who can’t bring himself to focus on other people’s needs, even when that’s the core of his job.

And then there’s health care.

Obamacare repeal has failed again, for the simple reason that Graham-Cassidy, like all the other G.O.P. proposals, was a piece of meanspirited junk. But while the Affordable Care Act survives, the Trump administration is openly trying to sabotage the law’s functioning.

This sabotage is taking place on multiple levels. The administration has refused to confirm whether it will pay crucial subsidies to insurers that cover low-income customers. It has refused to clarify whether the requirement that healthy people buy insurance will be enforced. It has canceled or suspended outreach designed to get more people to sign up.

These actions translate directly into much higher premiums: Insurers don’t know if they’ll be compensated for major costs, and they have every reason to expect a smaller, sicker risk pool than before. And it’s too late to reverse the damage: Insurers are finalizing their 2018 rates as you read this.

Why are the Trumpists doing this? Is it a cynical calculation — make the A.C.A. fail, then claim that it was already doomed? I doubt it. For one thing, we’re not talking about people known for deep strategic calculations. For another, the A.C.A. won’t actually collapse; it will just become a program more focused on sicker, poorer Americans — and the political opposition to repeal won’t go away. Finally, when the bad news comes in, everyone will know whom to blame.

No, A.C.A. sabotage is best seen not as a strategy, but as a tantrum. We can’t repeal Obamacare? Well, then, we’ll screw it up. It’s not about achieving any clear goal, but about salving the president’s damaged self-esteem.

In short, Trump truly is unfit for this or any high office. And the damage caused by his unfitness will just keep growing.

The death toll just doubled from Trump bragging about only 16. He has no idea what is going to happen as the mountains start reporting and still no aid. No evacuations as hospitals are full and unable to handle the crushing demand, and Gutteriz says there is no transport to Chicago where they are willing to house thousands of refugee American citizens......shame. The two week mark Wed and 34 dead and rising quickly......but heck Puerto Rico is throwing our budget out of whack........anger beyond belief.

Some are American citizens... some are not.

Yes, some folks in Houston were not American citizens, but Fema helped. In regard to American citizens being transported to cities who offered housing, they will be transporting only American Citizens. So what was your implication?

Gutteriz and Rahm have places where familes can stay in Chicago, as does NY and other major cities. He was literally crying on local tv about the failure to provide transport and how desperate the situation is getting in the mountains.
