The British Open 2017 Open Championship is the 146th Open Championship, and is being held 20–23 July at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. It is the tenth Open Championship played at Royal Birkdale, which held its first in 1954. 2017 is the first year that the prize money will be paid in United States dollars, rather than British pounds In the third round, Branden Grace shot 62, which set the Major Championship record.

You hear about the lucky breaks and bounces in golf at The Open Championship more than any other major. Two players may hit two equally poor shots and end up in completely different positions. We see it repeatedly across all tours, but at The Open, where you never know what kind of junk a wayward ball is flying into, you’re truly at the mercy of the golf gods, if you believe in that kind of thing.

On Saturday, Dustin Johnson’s worst swing of the week ended up with the luckiest break of the championship so far. DJ’s ball at the short par-4 5th was so far left that it actually flew past all the intervening muck, slammed into a grandstand, and bounced perfectly onto the green. Johnson is the longest hitter in the world, British Open Final so going for the green was a fine and wise play, but a yank that bad usually gets penalized. A great bounce off the grandstands isn’t the kind of golf luck indigenous only to links golf, but DJ will take it right now.

2017 Open Championship

The second round at the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, featured many high scores because of the wind and rain, the latter of which was so bad at one point it led to a small delay. However, the conditions have been pristine on Saturday, and the players are taking full advantage. Here’s a look at three golfers who posted five over (the cut line) through two rounds and bounced back on Saturday with solid performances.

He was unlucky not to be even closer to par, with birdie attempts on the seventh and eighth shaving the hole. Striking his irons crisply, he drained a four-metre putt on the ninth to give himself a glimmer of hope at the turn.

British Open Live I have played with Alfie for quite a few years now, OConnor explained. I caddied for him at the Amateur Championship as well. It is just a proud, proud thing to see him here, in the Open Championship. With his wife and daughter, O’Connor was one of roughly 150 folks from the club who early in the week make the 4½-hour trip to see the 25-year-old Plant play in his first Open Championship. It’s not hard to miss Plant’s followers at Birkdale. Seemingly everywhere you turn you run into somebody with a T-shirt or hat TeamAlfie. The idea for the clothing was Alfie’s father, Darren Plant.

He plays golf in the sweep, like all of us. Puts his name in and puts in his money.
