I took my 80 lb. German Shepard today to get spayed by a vet. I could have taken her to the Humane Society and had it done for less than half the price but since she was a rescue and had been abused I thought she would be treated better by a private vet. The Humane Society had an assembly line operation that didn't set well w/ me. When I got to the vets they apparently had an assembly line operation too. A lot of other pets were getting spayed or neutered. I had left her food bowl out last night not thinking she could have eaten something after we went to bed and told the staff that concerned me. I didn't want her to aspirate while under the anesthesia. They told me for $50 they would give her an anti nausea shot.$50 for a nausea pill! I agreed since I was already there. Later on I get a call she's doing fine but it would be an extra charge because she oozed and bled more than usual and they thought she was in heat. WTF! I said she was just in heat at the end of April. How many times do they go in heat? Supposedly twice a year. I get down there and they present the bill and say the Dr. couldn't tell if she was pregnant or in heat. I said well she was just in heat 21/2 months ago so I don't think she was in heat unless she's a wonder dog that goes in heat every three months. What kind of vet can't tell if your dog is pregnant? If she was pregnant she would have had pups by now since it was over 60 days. I then get her out to my truck and she can hardly walk and I can't pick up an 80lb. dog. Nobody offered to help her get in the truck. She finally hopped up herself stumbling along the way and in pain. Two pain pills a day for 3 days which don't appear to work very well. I hate I did this to her now as she is in great pain. My son and I carried her into the house when I got home because she wouldn't climb down from the truck. I have a bad taste in my mouth for veterinarians now. The greediness is like the greediness for human care.I love that dog more than I love many humans. This whole spaying thing is very unpleasant. I know it's best for her but man it sucks.

Gosh... that sounds worse than usual for sure. Did they have an IV giving fluids? I'm sure that's more expensive too... but I think it's a very good idea to be given fluids during the procedure. More so that she bled. Is she drinking now? I'd keep a close eye on intake and output for a few days. Good luck.

Some vets are great.   Others... not at all.  Sounds like yours isn't very competent.  They're not supposed to spay animals that are in heat or pregnant unless it's an emergency.  It's dangerous.

My regular vet is great.  He's always been really careful and kind with my dogs and cats, and I've always been happy with him.  I started taking care of a stray feral cat and when I took her in to get spayed they sent me home with her because they thought she might be too young and didn't want to take any chances, since spaying too young can hurt them.  They were very careful, and when I took her in a few months later, she came back fine and didn't seem to even notice that anything had happened to her.

I also had an ex-girlfriend who was a vet (or at least working in a vet's office while she was studying to be one), and she ended up being a crazy mess of a person, but I'd still trust her with an animal any day.  She had a lot of flaws, but none of 'em involved animals.  She was very kind to them.

Another vet I went to once, though, made me consider kicking his ass.  I had a cat who needed to be fixed, so I took him in, and they did it.  A few days later, the cat had a big abscess on his hip, and it ruptured and he was really sick.  Now, I don't think the vet caused the abscess, he probably got it from a fight with another cat... but what vet would do an elective surgical procedure on a cat that already had a big infection?  You just don't do that.  It could've killed him.  Anyway, the vet fixed the abscess and it was really gruesome and took months to heal.  About the time it healed the cat got run over in the highway.  Not a very lucky cat...

Hope your dog recovers quickly!  I hate it when animals are in pain.

I have had fewer good results from vets than bad results. The key is finding a good one. We have found that staying away from urban or suburban vets and finding a vet who is in farm country is the best bet. Rescue pups are automatically given their shots and neutered before the adoption in this area. I do not know if studies have been done as to how old a dog should be, but I know our rescue dog and her sister get very anxious in the car and I wonder about their transport from KY as to whether they were recovering from being spayed and associate pain with a car.

I don't know if she had IV or not. They don't let you in there. We got her onto her bed and she just laid there w/ her eyes open for like 6 hrs. She wouldn't take the pain pill so I crushed in up w/ apple juice and injected it in a syringe into her mouth a little at a time. She is up and walking around some this morning and ate but definitely not in good spirits.

Thanks! I don't think she was pregnant or in heat though. Seems to me a vet would be able to tell that though. She is doing better this morning. I mean they took out her ovaries and fallopian tubes. A major surgery and then give you two pain pills for 24 hrs?

I can't imagine transporting a dog after surgery. My dog vomited for the first few weeks in a car. I had to take her on short rides and now she does fine. I found her on Craigslist. An elderly man rescued her from an abusive alcoholic. The neighbors called him because he was an animal lover. She was skinny and cowered terribly when I got her. The old guy just knocked on the door and asked if he could have her and the alcoholic said "yeah, I was gonna put her down anyway". This is the smartest dog I've ever had. Very loving and obedient. Never leaves my side. I don't know what all she has been through but I got lucky as she's a great dog.

Viking I'm so sorry both you and your poor beloved doggie have had to suffer through all this pain, both emotional and physical. Such a sad story. Sad

I hope she recovers quickly but, in any event, I'm thinking you must be thinking it's time to find a new vet (easier said than done, I know)...unless perhaps you'd like to write a detailed letter to the vet -- you could start with what you wrote for us above -- letting them know how disappointed you were in how things went, that you are telling others about it (you don't have to say you didn't mention their name), and asking for their response. How (or if) they respond might give you all the impetus you need to make a decision about any future dealings with them, but, perhaps more importantly -- whether or not you return -- just might educate the vet on how the practice is being perceived and thus might improve conditions for future pets' experiences. Big maybe, I realize.

Just a thought, and perhaps you'd already planned to do this. Good for you if so.

German Shepards are extremely bright. Our dog never leaves my wife's side. She is very protective of my wife when I am not around, and acts like a big baby when I am around and she is scared by something. However, I am confident if someone tried to harm my wife, they would get a handful because she is part shepard, but mostly a hound blend. She also is the smartest dog we have had in 41 years, but we attribute much of that being that my wife is retired and I am semi retired and we have never spent more time with our dogs than we do with this one. She is four years old and actually watches tv with our granddaughters and whines in certain situations on TV. We have never had a dog who could comprehend what was on TV. We have to spell things in front of her because she understands our words, and the one thing we cannot say in her presence is golf cart. So we started to use the initials GC, and now she has cracked that code and comes running. She associates the golf cart with a three mile run on the islands, but her vocabulary is even larger and getting more amazing as she gets older. The best part is that she pouts if I do not respond to her demands. It is hilarious as she sits or lies with her back to me and will not acknowledge my presence. She likes the vet and the smells, and has not had a bad experience with our current vet.

Thank you. I am going to send them an email on how I think they could provide a better service. It's funny how your animals become your children. In my younger working years I never had time to dote on an animal but they become very important to you when you get older as least this dog is to me.

I was very surprised at how smart this dog is. I taught her after only a couple of tries to shake and sit and lay down. She also gives hugs on command. The doberman I had never could get it and didn't listen when you called her. This dog will stop dead in her tracks if I tell her no or not to go somewhere and I never had to work repeatedly to do that. She does understand words quite clearly although my son says it's not the words but the tone of my voice but I disagree.

What we loved about the shepard we shared with our daughter was that our malmutte (sp) would get out and run. All we had to say to Freda was go get Tyra, and damn that dog would start steering the dog back to the house. Also when my wife would be cutting the islands and the dogs had gotten tired of waiting to go back into the house, they teamed up and blocked my wife on the lawnmower. This was all the shepard. We got our dog after the Shepard died and the rescue pound in KY said is was a non pure bred shepard. So when the two pups came my wife gave my daughter and her husband first pick. As a young puppy Ellie looked more like a shepard than wilma. Well we got Wilma, and she was much smaller than her sister, but much more shepard and not as much hound.....her sister is sweet, but we call her box of rocks.

I would get any shepard mix from a rescue pound in a NY second. I am not a fan of puppy mills and pure bred dogs which lead to abuses of dogs.

I just went ballistic on a vet this afternoon. My wife is taking a bath as we had a dinner cookout with another couple at 4pm. I have been spending a lot of time in my chair when I look at the security cameras and about 12 people with tubes are coming off the river onto our property. I am not happy because they usually leave trash, vandalize, and damage our property and 200 yards from our property is a state park where they are suppose to get out. The first guy comes up to my mule battery operated gate and just pushes the gate open breaking the worm gear and completely messing the gate up. It is only a 300 piston which needs to be replaced, but we have drunk trespassers doing this four or five times in the summer so I go out ready to kick this guys asz, and my wife is nowhere around to deescalate the situation. I come out of the house ready to hurt some people. I let a few F bombs fly and let them know they have trespassed and the criminal damage to the gate happens every summer from drunks coming off the river. This big guy did not like my language and he was going to challenge me.....well I let him know in no uncertain terms I will use the F word anytime I want when dealing with drunk criminals and then start going toward him.......when out of the crowd of these thirty something people this girls steps forward and says sir....sir....we were wrong....I will give you my name phone number and office in a nearby town and you can call me with the amount of the damage. I pull her to the side and explain that I am sick, and literally tired of this kind of damage from drunks. She says you have every right to be mad, and I will make sure the gate is fixed to your satisfaction. I find out that they really are not locals but came from about 20 miles and did not know the river that well.....I also recognized the woman's name. It was girl in my son's high school class who is a vet and graduated from the U of I vet school which is harder to get into than med school. The guys were all drunk little wussies who stfu after I talked about prosecuting them, and one girl had the courage to step forward and do the right thing. I know her parents and they farm 2500 acres and are good people.

I am going to call her Monday and tell her that I will fix the gate. The problem is I do not feel good putting this all on this group as it has been done twice this summer and we repair the gate and it barely functions, but I cannot honestly expect these idiots to pay for the whole thing. The worse part is there is a big sign saying to not push the gate. It is so refreshing to see a woman with courage where these young men my son's age are simply disgusting to me. The guy who broke the gate did not have the courage with me chewing on him to do what this woman did, and the big guy who was going to get in my disappeared like a teenager who is suppose to shovel the driveway. The vet was always a very good person of high character.....why she was hanging out with a bunch of drunk wussies is beyond me.

Just spoke with the vet this morning and found out she is married and has two young kids. She again apologized, but said they did not see any signs. We have a sign which is 4 by 4 which has an arrow to the main channel and an arrow to the dead end. Nice conversation, and told her we were able to re-bolt the support post and adjust the gate and did not feel right having them pay for a new cylinder as there have been two more incidents this summer. Told her about her father in high school taking a milk cow and putting it in the second floor of the high school, and how her father has always been a good man, yet that group of drunk guys did not have the courage to do the right thing.....it took her to have the character. She does 75% of her practice in small animals, and 25% in farm animals. Told her we would be bringing our dog over to her as it is just about 5 miles further than our current vet who we really has no complaints, but they are a little pricey. She said her offices are not as fancy as our current vet but they will do a good job. lemonade.

If you are part of a bunch of drunks who are causing criminal damage to a gate, King of the aszholes is an understatement.

I have always used Dr. Steadman on N. Davis. His office is the same old concrete block structure...no frills, reasonable prices and great staff. He has gone above and beyond for me...once treated a dog that my neighbors left behind when they moved out (don't get me started). The dog had heartworms and did not survive the treatment, which Dr. Steadman did for free...and his office manager had a new home lined up, had the dog lived...probably died of a broken heart.

We used to have a black lab. His name was Scooter. He used to go the shipyard with me and hang out with the yard dog who's names was Critter. He was a great dog. One day he got real sick so my son noticed it and said we needed to take hime to the vet. we loaded him up and went to see Dr Stine. I told my son to be strong and try not to cry because Scooter really didnt look good. Sure enough the Vet came in the room and said scooter had cancer and there wasnt much he could do for him. My son looked at me, and I started to cry. LOL I almost never cry. It was maybe the first time my son had seen me cry. He said "Its ok Dad" The vet was touched and said he would operate on him but couldnt guarantee anything. Scooter made it and lived another 5 years until he went blind. So much for being a tough guy LOL

I could not bring myself to putting down two of the last three years. One was 15 and suffered because my wife begged me to put her down. She tricked me a little bit as saying the kennel would not take her for our two week summer vacation with the kids. She got me to reluctantly agree as she was blind and having daily strokes, and the younger dog was not being kind to her. I should have listened to my wife a year earlier. My son went to the vet and was deeply troubled after the dog was put down.

The second one I said no for about a month, but the wife reminded me of the pain of our prior dog. This time I carried her in, again with my son. He was very upset and I was just really quiet, as I tried to explain that Mrs. Seaoat was correct and that it was selfish for us to extend life in suffering and pain.

The last dog was 15 and was actively bleeding from tumors which the doctor saw no hope. Mrs. Seaoat took her out for a run on the islands.....more of a slow walk as she approached the water and had a wonderful morning, and then she made some of her favorite people food which was raw burger meat, and then took her to the vet. Her tail was wagging when she went in as she never had anxiety going to the vet. Each of them caused quiet tears and self doubt that maybe something medically could have been provided to extend life......boy do I understand now that extending life in pain and misery is not doing any favors to an animal. Mrs. Seaoat had the strength to put the dogs before emotion.
