Rand Paul said he heard a shot and thought somebody was firing a shotgun. He said he's used to hearing that since he grew up in the South and hearing a shotgun being fired isn't that unusual in the South but then he realized he was in the city and not out in the country.

From Newsday:

If the wounded congressman’s name sounds familiar outside his district, it may be because Scalise found himself on a national hot seat in early 2015. That was when word spread that he had spoken in 2002 at a white supremacist conference organized by David Duke, the former KKK leader.

Even is that were contextually factual... you're rationalizing his shooting. Is this the new standard?

The wound was much more serious than some of the folks who were there reported. The Congressman is very fortunate to be alive with the nature of this wound.
