My wife and I are used to getting our asz kicked. What fun would life be if you had everything go the way you expected. I have been on the bobcat all day yesterday with $750 and three semis of 2-4 inch gravel to try to raise the first causeway so we could still pull the weekend off, but the river just got too deep. We never quit. My daughter will bring the grand daughters out Sunday, but they are really disappointed as they love exploring. Last visit it was teaching them about red winged blackbirds and how they attack people who come into their territory. They are like sponges absorbing everything in the natural world. I am disappointed, but you do not have islands in the middle of a river and expect them to never flood......I just wish it was not the 4th of July weekend.

There is enough love to compensate the flooding.

Yes, but with limited time, I was so looking forward to exploring with them in the golf cart. We cannot even cross the first causeway with the golf cart and it will be Monday before I can get it out on the islands. Grandparents are at their best when they can teach grandchildren. As an Eagle Scout, I have lived my life consumed by the beauty of nature, and to plant that seed in a young child is a lifetime gift. I have a dear friend who has been to the Mayo Clinic as his prostrate cancer is out of control. He just got done with his chemo and his PSA counts went up. He spent three weeks of his life barely able to go from the bedroom to the bathroom and I played poker with him Wed. He told me quite bluntly....Seaoat make your peace with the lord and do not do the chemo. I was suppose to decide on whether I should get chemo embolization on the liver which can take no more radiation in July. To me three more months of a low quality of life is not an option. So knowing what I am facing this weekend was important as the grandkids would see me still able to move around and enjoy nature. I get things do not work out sometimes, and as I told my wife this morning......I am glad the guy upstairs has a sense of humor....I think he has extended my life just for grins and giggles. I am thankful for the same, but I would lie if I said I am not disappointed.

I have a plumber friend who insisted on coming to the islands to spend the weekend, but he has a boat which he will launch at a park down the river and then float over to the islands. Way too dangerous for my liking so I printed the river gage and made them sign an assumption of the risk.....they just laughed at me, but I know the dangers of the high water in a river and think they are fricking crazy. Whole maple trees are floating down the river, and these guys know that fishing is best in high water.....fish junkies.

What a wonderful day with the daughter and granddaughters. We could not get over to a lot of the islands, but did fossil hunting, and they helped me stack firewood. What a joy for an old sick guy. We get them latter next week for two days. They can help clean up after the flooding. They are simply beautiful and getting so smart. My wife and I used to hunt for Geodes near Hamilton Illinois on the Mississippi. We were probably in our early twenties and have a pretty nice collection. The girls found them and wanted to know what they were as papa explained how water with a high acid content will start to dissolve the interior of these rocks which roll on a stream that feeds the river. They found one which was hollow with a small hole which I blow into to make cool sounds. I told the Girls that Mimi will give each of them one of the geodes after I die, and my oldest granddaughter goes......not yet papa......way too much fun to know your time is limited and to be able to enjoy such beautiful creatures.
