1 Pay for your own damn G.I. Bill... on 4/20/2017, 7:19 pm

The audacity of conservatives is almost beyond belief. They now want to charge soldiers for G.I. Bill benefits!

The ignorant hillbilly Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs, Phil Roe, a Republican (natch) from Tennessee, wants to charge soldiers $100 a month to get G.I.Bill benefits. What a scumbag.

The ironic thing is how many members of the military voted for Trump. Maybe he figures if they were dumb enough to do that, they'll put up with anything.

As far as I'm concerned, any member of the military who serves in a combat zone ought to get $50 a month for life for every month he (or, lamentably, she) serves there. Fifty bucks a month for life, free of all income tax, like a tax-free annuity.

Well, the good things are: This fiasco will probably fail and it is probably the death knell for this hillbilly piece-of-shit's career in Congress. I'd love to see his next town hall.

Typical GOP fake patriotism at its finest! Interesting website and comments after the article.

Help me. How does this math work?

House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) has drafted legislation that would charge soldiers $100 a month for access to the GI Bill. The bill would deduct a total of $2,400 from each soldier’s paycheck to make them eligible.

Nothing adds up in this link.

Fortunately, here is a better link with real numbers.

Actually, other than in combat situations the worship of the military has gotten out of control. Most of them never were in any danger and got a regular paycheck and more benefits than any other sector in existence for doing a job they couldn't get in civilian life. Healthcare for life,VA,college tuition, disability payments for non connected illnesses, etc. Cops and firefighters risk their lives everyday for none of this. I think if you saw combat you should get these benefits but if you sat in a personnel office pushing paper, not hardly.

I know these things are difficult for you, but please show me in your link where they referenced the two year period of taking 100 out of a veteran's benefit. Take your time.

In regard to joining the military, it is said that almost 80% of all military employment is non combat by definition. I have heard through the years as few as 1% actually participated in combat, to as high as 10% using WW2 as the high point. So if you eliminated 90-99% of benefits to the military based on that criteria, you are going to get blow back. I do not think anything is wrong on talking about cutting back military expense, which will have to include a discussion of benefits. However, I do not like breaking promises to vets when they enlisted based on what was promised.

You're right, it's absolutely mind-boggling, like some kind of damn quantum physics problem. If Billy has to pay $100 a month until he pays a total of $2400, how many months will it take? How many months in a year?

Baffling! I agree with you, these higher math problems are frustrating.  Boolean Algebra, Differential Calculus, who on earth understands that stuff. Maybe those kids on The Big Bang Theory or something, but not us normal folks. I feel your pain.

Here's something that may help:
