I wonder what the reaction will be from Russia, Syria, Iran and others. Also I have a question as to whether or not 45 talked to our allies before going ahead with this.

Could be the start of something new, but what?

The USA entered WWI 100 years ago today. April 6 1917.

Wow, Tell  - that's pretty amazing.

Othershoe, all the info about what our allies knew and when will doubtless be aired in full over the next day or two.  I'm reading at least that Russia was informed, as well as Israel, and doubtless others.

It's easy to feel a certain revengeful "YESSSSS" after seeing the images following the gas attack in Syria, but cooler heads than I opine that there were avenues of diplomatic pressure Trump should've/could've explored first.   I'm sitting here with mixed opinions, so will reserve judgment.  I do look forward to hearing the Russian response, supposedly forthcoming very soon.  And of course I hope this doesn't result in some uncontrollable escalation.  Worse things have happened.

One thing for almost certain is that Trump will see a bump in his approval ratings, at least for the next couple of weeks, and presuming he hasn't ignited some firestorm.

On that note, am going to try to get some shut-eye, IF I can.

Goodnight all,
LindaL

Well, in 2013 when Obama asked Congress for approval to strike Syria for their chemical attacks on children there was Repug opposition. Now I want to hear what the repugs say now that Trump went ahead and ordered strikes.

I wonder how many civilians and children were killed in this air base attack?

Apparently, there is a chemical weapons depot at the airbase that was struck, and they were careful not hit that for fear of mass civilian casualties.

There were also Russian at the base who were at the base who were given advanced warning to vacate.

So, there were Russians at a base that has a chemical weapons depot, and the Russians were supposedly in charge of removing and policing Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles.

We have a problem.

You have to presume that this is all known to the National Security people, no?

IF all Sal said is true, he found it out somewhere. In that case there would be no doubt that people in National Security area knew this too. Obviously.

If Obama basically asked permission it would seem that it was a requirement for such action. Congress didn't want to take responsibility for it and certainly didn't want to do anything that might make him look good. Now 45 has gone ahead and would have to ask for forgiveness (totally not happening) rather than ask for permission (not in his universe).

If this was the right thing to do it is pitiful that our politics has degenerated to the point where the right thing can't be done because of political concerns over making a president of the opposing party look effective or good.

Now, if this turns out well 45 will look great but if it goes south they can change their tune and start grossing about not having been consulted. Most of what I'm seeing has congressmen saying they think this was reasonable.

We spend $95 million blowing up a deserted airfield, and Putin gets to act all peeved.

Don't you just love kabuki theater?

Closer to $50M and the base was not deserted.

I am bothered by the lack of congressional approval for this attack. However, with the Russian infiltration of American cyber space and more, it probably required a decisive action. This was a violation of international law, and like the invasion of Iraq the justification may not even be accurate. I worry about this approach in North Korea. MIC gets its way no matter what. Militarization and destroying the nation state which threatened Israel seems to be our path. However, North Korea is a real threat to America, and if this method is used it will be hundreds of thousands of deaths which will most certainly happen. If this was an indirect message to North Korea, and American intelligence gave the Presidency certainty of where this chemical attack originated, perhaps this was the only decision which made sense.

I am not saying this was the right decision. I am not even saying it was the wrong decision. I am not saying that a President should be handcuffed and only act with Congress. I am simply saying without more information, I am uncertain what the upside of this action was, and what future concerns I have in another context.

It may sound cynical, but I really do think that Trump saw this as an opportunity to change the narrative at home and maybe boost his sagging approval.

If he gave a rat's ass about dead civilians, he wouldn't be trying his damnedest to prevent refugees from reaching the safety of our shores.
