high school baseball starting pre season.....How is he doing Sal

I drove by Navarre High school and kids were playing under the lights. We never started until late march in Illinois.....that is why there are so many talented baseball players from Florida. Keep us updated.

Meh ...

... I don't like him ...

... he's 17, he can thrown an 87 mph fast ball, has a killer change up, and he's most interested in hanging with clowns, drinking, and chasing tail.

He's got colleges tracking him, but his priorities are garbage.

He reminds me way too much of myself at the same crossroads.

Oh well, his journey is his.

I did what I could.

I had the same situation with my son being rebellious. He dominated baseball as a pitcher, and I was excited when he was a freshman because he knew how much I enjoyed baseball. He went out for track. Best damn pitcher in the school and he goes out for track. High jumping and hurdles, but the one sport I knew nothing about pole vault, and by his sophomore year he helped his track team take third in state as he got seventh. His junior year he finished fourth, and Iowa wanted him to pole vault. Senior year he was jumping 15.4 which was higher than Richards in the Olympics when in the early fifties, and bam......he fell and injured his knee. He never got the explosion as he grew about three inches his senior year and put on about 20 lbs of muscle as he just got too big for pole vault. Iowa passed and he pole vaulted for University of Illinois, but again he kept growing and never achieved the heights of his senior year before his injury. He is a great dad with two boys and that rock and roll drummer is now selling real estate in downtown Chicago. Don't worry.....my son's girlfriend from high school is now his wife, and things just kind of work out......but damn he could throw fire.

He's playing. He pitched against the best team in the district, and allowed two hits over five innings, and they lost 7-1. He scored the one run. Now his elbow is an issue again, so they're playing him at first, and in the last two games, he has two doubles and a triple. We have an appointment with the doc, so we'll see where we go from here. He's a prospect, but flirting being a huge waste.

I loved my son to pieces until he was about age 12, and then (though I still loved him), basically couldn't stand his sorry asz until about age 20, when he'd straightened up some (and acknowledged that his mom had saved him from ruination). Even at that he failed to demonstrate much real ambition and responsibility until many years later when he finally got his asz in gear, largely due to being inspired by his very hard working girlfriend, now wife. I respect him greatly, a relatively late emotion for me as to him.

So hang tough, Sal; things can change dramatically with time.

Boys are just different today. They just seem to mature about five years later than girls. It appears that girls have become more goal oriented and focused on careers. Boys seem to meander through life from 15 to 25. Like Linda, his girlfriend has helped to shape him into a great husband, father, and employee. I had his boss at his wedding say that without my son he would close his brokerage down, as apparently he is managing it and they all depend on him........15 to 25......he could not manage what shirt he was going to wear that day as he did NOTHING. I saw the same immature behavior in my son in law, and I think it is a systemic change in the way boys are raised today. The energy which gets them in trouble in youth is often the same energy which contributes to their success as a man, but boys are being beaten down in pre junior high to be compliant and docile. I think the result is a big don't give a F.

I got burned out on tennis at 14 and flat quit. My dad didn't understand at all... but I'd just had enough. I'd spend 4 and 5 hours a day playing. Flying all over (often alone at 12,13) to play tournaments. I did start playing again in my senior year... and even chose to play tennis in college. But we butted heads during hs... especially when I tore up an ankle playing football my senior year. It was really the only reason that I went back to tennis in the spring. But I enjoyed it much more than when I was younger.

Geez ... that's pretty bad.

I'm not enjoying this season and getting confused.

In the past four games, they've lost 23-1.

The one run was the homerun, obviously, and they lost that one too.

Off to the orthopedic guy on 4/4.

Might be a blessing.

Best wishes for him. I hate when kids get injured. I broke my arm in an eighth grade basketball game, both radii and it was my pitching arm. I just was dominating until that time pitching and convinced myself I would pitch in the majors. I did not play that spring and by the next year I had messed up my growth plates and never got my velocity back.....it was devastating for a kid who dreamed of pitching, but I was done with competitive baseball, but played third base in adult softball for twenty years and could still hit, but I always had a hollow spot in all other sports.....there is nothing quite like standing on the mound and looking a batter in the eye and striking that batter out........of course it always did not work that way as one guy taught my smart asz that he could put two home runs in one game on the church roof way....way....way out in center field. I have nothing but fond memories of baseball and softball. I hope he finds the fun in the game again, and you get to enjoy his having fun playing.

Physically, he's a tough guy, so he'll do fine with whatever the diagnosis.

Mentally and maturity wise, he has some issues.

Must be genetic.

Florida produces so many major league players compared to Northern States which do not start their season until April. I have been seeing kids practicing since early February. On the Weekends the Navarre ball fields are filled with kids. It is no wonder the minor league team took off.

Kid threw a complete game shutout this morning against their rival school and scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the final inning.

In other good news, his elbow issue has nothing to do with ligaments.

It's a nerve issue called a sublixing ulnar nerve.

May or may not require surgery to fix it, but even if it does, it's a 2 month recovery compared to a 12 month recovery from Tommy John.

I had that nerve bother me once. I didn't have time to rest it because of a big tournament so the Dr ordered a cream made out of pepper corns. It numbed it after a few days and I was able to play.
