Palm Tree advice...

I'm re-building my gardens. I took out some sagos and want to replace them with some taller palms that will grow to 12-14' tall max.

What is a hearty palm that will thrive in our area?

I asked the same question from the nursery on 90 and 87 when we bought some tall grasses. The grasses are drought resistant and we had planted some shrubs in the same area last year at this time. We planted about twenty shrubs and lost about 16 of them. The man told me with a palm tree you need a great deal of water. He did not have one which was drought resistant. I would think you would have to sprinkle any new planting around the base for a good while until it was established, but if you are putting it in a high, dry, sunny area it sure sounded like you need to have permanent sprinkling on a palm. I know I did not answer your question, but I think most of the standard palms that are being sold do pretty well when sprinkled.

Pindo palms. Cold or drought won't kill them.

I agree with Viking, Pindo's are slow growing and evidently survive quite well after a regimen of regular watering. The watering also depends on the condition of the material in which they are planted, e.g., sandy soil will leach the water and thus require more water.

I never watered my Pindo palm. Somebody threw one away on the side of the road and I planted it in my yard and it's indestructible. I have a picture of the winter when it iced everything and my Pindo was dragging the ground w/ heavy ice and it sprung right back in the spring. I fertilized it though. I'm not crazy about all those dates it produces.
