More than seven years after angry anti-Obamacare town halls erupted across the country, raw emotions are boiling over again -- this time, as the Republican Party under President Donald Trump gears up to dismantle Barack Obama's legacy.

And the fury is flaring up in some of most conservative corners of the country.
On Thursday night, two Republican members of Congress -- Reps. Jason Chaffetz of Utah and Diane Black of Tennessee -- were each confronted with impassioned constituents during simultaneous events. The shouted questions, emotional pleas and raucous protesters of the evening crystalized the GOP's tough political road ahead as it forges ahead with rolling back Obama's accomplishments, including the Affordable Care Act.

Definitely taking a page from the Tea Party playbook. Good -- but can they keep up the pressure until the mid-terms? May not need to if Trump keeps making a G.D. fool of himself.

If things get too out of hand maybe his Russian masters will cut his strings.

Unless Trump completely blows up the GOP, the midterms aren't going to make anything any better.

Structurally, it's just not doable.

Here are the Senate Republican seats up for reelection in 2018 ...

1. John Barrasso of Wyoming
2. Bob Corker of Tennessee
3. Ted Cruz of Texas
4. Deb Fischer of Nebraska
5. Jeff Flake of Arizona
6. Orrin Hatch of Utah
7. Dean Heller of Nevada
8. Roger Wicker of Mississippi

Doesn't look very promising, does it?

And, of course, the House is even worse.

And, the class of 2020 is not much more promising.

We really are well and completely fucked.

I just wonder how long it will take before the public realizes that its government doesn't even bear a passing resemblance to being representative and becomes violent.

I fear it's all but inevitable at this point.

If the mobs get too angry and and Americans refuse to fire on Americans, they can always call in the troops. The Russian troops.

You might be able to target two of the senate seats in Cruz and Flake with good candidates, and folks getting people to primary both Cruz and Flake with very conservative candidates who alienate and divide their base. You have to play hardball.

Doesn't really change the odds tho.

Maybe not, but I'll blindly plow on with hope, false or otherwise.

The other thing that folks do not think about is that it only takes two senators who disagree with President Trump to stop an improper agenda, and Collins and Paul do not have any love for President Trump, and do not share some of his views. It is my position that when he is reigned in by the constraints of the checks and balances of our democracy, he will have one of his hissy fits and pack up and resign giving some excuse about the evil media. The media is beginning to do to him what it did to President Bush and President Obama. Controversy sells, and President Trump has been great for media business, and that is entirely the reason we have a President Trump.

Profiles in courage are in short supply in DC in general and in the Republican party particularly.

Maybe if the judiciary kicks him around enough, a few will grow spines.

Protests are fine and dandy as long as they are peaceful, but I wonder how many of the protesters voted?

Hell, I find among my friends that the most outspoken do not even bother to vote. Since I have been old enough to vote, I have missed only two elections. One was a local school board election, and the other was the Republican primary vote in 2016 as I was in Florida and thought I would be returning to vote, but had issues with the project which got us home two day too late to vote. People need to get registered and vote. It is the only answer. I have little use for protests as they are not concrete hard work of voter registration and real legislative detail which can bring real improvements for all Americans. Those take hard work, the other is almost a social gathering which could be a tupperware party as much as a protest. Detail matters.

If this becomes a trend, Republicans face slaughter in the 2018 midterms. They have for sure lost the Latino vote already. When Mexican-Americans start seeing their undocumented friends and relatives being summarily deported, they will come out and vote.

Further, their plans to monkey with the ACA are turning other voters against them. What will Trump do if voters install a Democratic House and Senate to thwart him?

During a town hall for Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) today, the secretary of the county’s Republican Party was met with loud jeers and chants of “liar” when he made the claim that there’s a “death panel” provision in the Affordable Care Act.

Speaking to the crowd, Bill Akins attempted to explain why he was against Obamacare, but found resistance when he made a specific claim.

“Here’s the problem i have with the Affordable Care Act,” he said. “Number one, there is a provision in there that anyone over the age of 74 has to go before what is effectively a death panel.”

The moment after uttering those words, the audience went ballistic, with many shouting “no” and yelling out that Akins was lying. As they went nuts, Akins asserted he was correct and that the death panel provision was in there. (For the record, the death panel claim was rated as PolitiFact’s ‘Lie of the Year’ in 2009 with NPR noting that the lie has continued to live on.)

“OK, children. Alright, children,” Akins stated, mocking the crowd.

Town halls for GOP representatives have grown very contentious of late as the members of Congress have faced large crowds filled with Democrats confronting them about issues such as repealing Obamacare. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) faced an angry audience earlier this week, with many expressing outrage over the House Oversight Committee chair not going after President Donald Trump over ethics concerns.

I have donated money to local Republicans for thirty years. In good years, I have donated to multiple Republican candidates and show up on all the databases. When I call and say, I will be donating to a primary challenger, I get multiple calls from the office of the representative. I do not give a lot of money, but it does give me access. I would suggest folks around here make a 25 buck donation to your local rep, and then on specific legislation send an email or letter with a check. Once you show up on their database as a contributor, your complaints get their attention.

My best job in this regard was an email to the Biloxi House Rep who voted against relief for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. I went ballistic. I was going to drive over and chew him out as I had taken in 20 refugees from Biloxi after Hurricane Katrina and they stayed in my new Navarre House for four months as I lost about 5k rents, and had to put a new 2500 sewage pump in after it was overloaded. I did not live in the district, and they kept blocking my attempts to email the district office, so I used the address of a local printer whose employees and families used my house and they took my email. I told them I will spend every dime I have to get those twenty people in his district to each get twenty more people to raise money and find a primary opponent who understands that folks got hurt in Katrina and it could happen again, and his attempt to hurt people in New Jersey was very small and short sighted. Two days later it was reported he flew to New Jersey to see the damage and changed his vote on the aid package. Each of us can make a difference, and you have to be smart to get around the walls which protect them from citizen input......donate.....equals access.....even a small donation.

Good God Oatie, you don't know why he changed his vote. Maybe a hundred people sent him an email? I doubt if your one little email and donation moved him.

Good God Oatie, you don't know why he changed his vote.

Yes I do.  He found out he was wrong.  I never made a donation to this man, and had a hard time communicating.   I never said I alone changed his mind, but my email was part of the process of him discovering why he was wrong.

I always get a kick out of people who feel helpless.  I rarely in a lifetime have that feeling.  I fight.   I remember standing up at a meeting where the school board was going to cut music, art, band, and all sports to balance a half million dollar shortfall in the budget.  It was a tactic to make students and parents suffer for two years and then get a referendum passed.   Politicians willing to sacrifice a couple years of high school students to gain a strategic goal.  I said we could raise the half million privately with fundraisers.  I was laughed at openly at the meeting.  I became King Lear's fool there to make the arrogant school board smile, but I said if you give me two weeks to bring in 10%, I will have a plan to raise the balance with a draw down raffle.  They laughed and ridiculed me, but others in the room trusted what I said I could do.  I handed them a 55k dollars of checks at the two week mark, and then proceeded to raise a little less than 600k for the school district which at the time was the largest fund raiser for a public school in Illinois history.  The same people who were laughing at me a year latter handed me a plaque, and the band won awards, the artist won awards, and two state championships later the athletics prospered as the students had their programs and we passed the referendums to give the band and theater students a new auditorium.  Citizens make a difference in America.   You just have to have the courage of your convictions to do good things in America.   Sitting back and believing that you cannot influence positive change is why evil wins.  People can influence their representatives and my use of the donation locally gives better access.  In Biloxi the threat of financial support for a primary opponent wakes people up, and it may only have been part of it......but it made a difference because he reversed his position.

Like conservatives do not get sick, or have preexisting conditions who are uncertain what their future holds. I suspect that the town halls do have agitators who are paid like Markle was. However, to deny concern about what will replace the ACA, or that death panels are simply propaganda used to give rich people a tax break is simply the truth.......look what has been done to date with executive orders.......follow the money. So maybe Vector is a Rich guy...... Laughing

I know you're being sarcastic, but you're welcome.

It is what I truly believe. I don't believe liberals are honest for the most part. At least when it comes to big government. They'll lie, cheat and steal to get their way. Because they believe their way is the best and only way for everyone. No matter what anyone else thinks or believes. A major reason for me being a conservative.

Science, logic, facts, and a republic which has worked quite well for a couple of hundred years with the majority of citizens voting for policy with inherent protections for minorities, yet you want your perverse hatred to be the standard. How has that worked for you?

Remember what happened to Nixon and Agnew. It can happen again.
