The wife has gotten to like Linda's pizza place and we were surprised at how crowded the place was around six.....people waiting for pick up, the dentist parking lot nearly full, and folks filling every table inside. A great many people must agree that the Panhandle is pizza wasteland, and this oasis is just what is needed.

I'm so glad you and your wife are enjoying the New Yorker Deli! Didn't realize you were back in town or might've headed up there this evening (we go out most Thursdays) hoping to catch a glance of you, instead of going to Shane's Rib Shack in Gulf Breeze, which didn't taste as good as usual but then I'm just getting over a bad cold. Anyway, it makes me happy that you've found a pizza oasis here. Realize it's a bit of a trip for you and pizza's the main objective, but hope maybe you'll occasionally be able to try other things on the extensive menu, as everything is always good, including their soups. Have probably mentioned they have a Reuben sandwich to die for. (We get the turkey version but of course they have lean corned beef as well.) Have never had a bad meal there. And yes, it's an extremely popular place among the locals, not just for pizza. Those homemade soups bring out a lot of people on chillier nights.

A couple next to us got the Reuben and my wife commented that everything being brought out looked good. We were working in Milton and the moon was full, and we discovered that "scenic highway" truly was beautiful looking down from the bluffs at the moon reflecting off the water. From where we were working it really is not that long of a drive, but we are now living out of Navarre and that was a bit of a haul. The place was packed. Young and old appreciated somebody who is willing to make quality and variety a standard. The dentist has that sign saying no parking, but the lot was almost full with restaurant patrons. I noticed that the court decision came on the tv and I was surprised with the comments in the room which were not favorable to President Trump. In Milton and Pace those comments were unheard as President Trump remains their collective hero.

It's one of the few establishments in this area that doesn't have Fox No-News running on its TV's all the time. Glad to learn what you heard from the viewers in the restaurant! It's definitely a more educated bunch than average.

I think the sign is still up outside near the entry door saying when not to park in the dentist's lot; otherwise, it's fine. Obviously they have an agreement.

And you're right -- variety, quality, good service, very reasonable pricing -- this place has it all. Such a winning combo that one wonders why every restaurant in the nation can't simply follow their formula and be a similar long-time success.

Oh, and the menu (as linked on the website) only mentions their four "regular" soups, served daily; they also offer several other soups for variety each day, posted on a board. All are excellent, IMHO.

The staff seem to enjoy their jobs, the customers seem to be very happy when waiting for food, and the folks around us could only say good things about their meals. I have been spending thirty plus years in the panhandle eating inferior pizza, until Linda recommended this place. My only criticism as a pizza gourmet is that the interior crust gets soggy, yet the exterior crust about four inches into the pie is crisp, light, and tasty. I do not know why about two inches from the middle of the pizza the pieces are soggy and flop down when trying to eat the same. I have solved the problem. I use a fork to eat about two inches of the soggy small end, and then pick the piece up which is self supporting. You lose some of the flavor in the soggy, but this is the second pizza which was soggy in the middle, and it might have something to do with us always ordering extra cheese.

Soggy pizza is not my thing. This is so many levels above Panhandle pizza generally that I can live with the soggy center. Chicago Pizza is the best in the world, so I have no qualms about being a poser.....I have been at the pizza places rated the best in the world for over fifty years....eating deep dish, thin crust, but nothing soggy. Folding over the soggy section onto the delightful crisp portion of the pizza would compromise the flavor of the best part. The fork is simply the best solution to overcome an obvious flaw in the pizza. Until you have been spoiled by the best, you cannot fully understand what a cultural wasteland pizza is in the panhandle. Now fresh seafood......no contest, I have gone to Mary Mahoney's in Biloxi and the Fish House in Pensacola, and there are few places in Chicago which can match what they are doing here.

Yes, I ate there years ago and was not impressed. Went this afternoon with the intention of getting a pizza to eat there but had a roast beef sandwich it was very good and we brought a pizza home. Bottom of pizza not the least bit brown or done for that matter, but it tasted good. The new york pizza's I've had in the past were real thin crust, this pizza was not.

Guess I should start asking the New Yorker for a commission on forum member sales. Ha.

Personally I've found wide variation over time in what supposedly constitutes a New York pizza crust. I do agree that the New Yorker's is not as thin and crisp as some, and have long thought theirs might be a compromise crust to appeal to the wide diversity of tastes in this area, including those like me who don't want a too-crisp crust. (But I also don't want a very thick. bread-like crust, such as is served across the street at Giorgio's. At least New Yorker's is far thinner than that.)

Sorry your crust was apparently underdone, ppaca. Has never happened to us there. Give 'em another chance? Glad it at least tasted good, and glad you enjoyed your roast beef.

It might be they are having a problem with their oven because the last three pizzas I had there were not soggy in the middle. In any case, it is by far the best we have eaten in Florida, and the wife cannot wait to go back and try some of the sandwiches. I am thankful for good recommendations. We have had great success with plumbing and air conditioning recommendations on this forum, and I miss Bob's input on things as he turned us into whataburger fans.

We used to enjoy a breakfast buffet at the old holiday Inn on Navarre beach and I am curious as to a good breakfast place which does not involve the waffle house. We still have not been to Chet's in Pace, and wanted to go last night, but the wife correctly pointed out that it probably will be crazy full of people because Valentine's Day is Tuesday and many people will go out Saturday and Sunday.

I had really planned to drive over to sky's on Davis, besides boards saying it was the best I know several people who rave about it. I owned and was in the pizza business for several years for chains and when I made myself a pizza would slap the dough out larger than the screen it was cooked on and cut the edges off so it would be then and crispy. The old baker pride ovens or woodfire stoves are the best to cook them in. The middle b marshall coveyer's can be adjusted to cook correctly on top and bottom but no one in this area seems to know how to do that. I have had thin crust at Santino's and while the top is cooked perfect the bottom is always damn near raw. I hardly ever there anymore. Rotolo's the past couple of times have gotten their thin crust perfect. When you have been in the business before I am always to quick to judge. lol

I will check out sky's next week, as it probably is closer. However, we will continue to go back to NY Deli. So you had to deal with the soggy portion of your pizza? Ours was only about an inch and a half from the center of the pizza. My brother built a woodburning pizza oven in his 13k square foot home in Arizona, and friends who have had one of their pizzas say they are incredible. My last visit was only one day and we had eaten before stopping by his house. I get real nervous being there with the dog because rattlesnakes get inside his pool area where he has the pizza oven. They once had a cougar drag a deer carcass onto their roof as they are literally on the side of a mountain. When he was building the house he had a rattlesnake rattle at him from two feet away sunning on his fuel tank on a piece of equipment he was about to start. Adios.......rattlesnakes are able to find a way into homes on the mountain, and scorpions require you check your shoes before putting them on......nope. The one good thing about cold winters are poisonous snakes are rarely found in Northern Illinois.

Must of it was a little soggy, bottom just not done. The taste was actually better this morning when I had some for breakfast.

Nothing much better than cold pizza, except, some would say, hot pizza.

Sky is my fav, Tuscan oven is good too. Haven't tried NY deli, but now I will.

I grew up in NYC, so I'm a bit of a pizza snob.

But hey... I like some good Chicago deep dish too!

We were going to stop by Sky's tonight, but it was Valentines day and we had laid two pallets of sod and were filthy. We will try it before we leave on Monday for my shots.
