The best experience for us was a three foot powder snow which literally had a snowbound on the mountain road three hundred yards from the resort. They plowed and we made it, but an old guy out of shape skiing in three feet of powder......not fun. As the day progressed and the trails got beaten down a little bit it was a blast, but there is nothing like being on a mountain in fresh powder where nobody else has gone, and to listen to the absolute silence. It is like the powder absorbs all the noise. My daugher, wife and son had a great time, but clearly I was already sick because I was exhaused.
I used to go to Wausau Wisconsin and ski Rib Mountian in my youth, and Chestnut mountain in the Galena area of Illinois, but to call these mountains was a joke and I would go way too fast in my risk taking and being at that time around 225 I would hit people as I got too fast and I almost killed a couple of people when there was icing and I was not skilled enough to get a proper edge. I hit a ski patrol guy and put him upside down in a rope lift at the support which was like a six foot hole and all the ski patrol guys came over as I was thinking I would get kicked out, but I was getting high fives as the guy could not get out of the hole. A lady I hit I honestly felt I killed her, and after that incident just would ski once or twice a year and stayed on less difficult runs. I completely understand how Sonny Bono died, but he only killed himself, I was a risk to everybody. I was just too big to get going fast and not having the skills to stop with ice.

It was beautiful in the mountains, and on that trip we had to go to the Coors brewery because you could not get Coors in Illinois, so we loaded the car........now you get it at Walmart, and it means nothing.

I rode the Suzuki Enduro quite a few times....but had to steer clear because I had the desire to race. Stupid k with the Honda 500. Eventually gave it up.Markle wrote:Joanimaroni wrote:Packed and ready.....sat with my orthopaedic surgeon yesterday at the Rec center aND told him where i was going. In between laughter..... When I was racing enduro's and motocross, I met my orthopedic surgeon in the cast room of Tallahassee Memorial Hosp. He came back with the x-ray, put his hand on my shoulder, held the x-ray up to the light and said to me, "Markle" in 20 or 30 years I hope you remember how much fun you were having! We both laughed...now, only he's laughing!

Having been an ER and Ortho nurse for over 30 years, I have seen my share of motocross injuries. Many tears shed as we cut off $200.00 plus enduro pants and shirts. The gear helped with road rash but not broken bones.

My serious racing bike was a Penton 250. A custom made and hand built bike for Enduros. Incredible machine. I would go to a race, sleep overnight then start to get ready. Lined up in rows of six I'd be thinking...just take it easy and have a really nice 100 mile ride. Next in line, and the adrenalin is at a peak, heart pounding and...BONZAI!!!
I can't think of anything more fun! Three broken ribs, handlebar into ribs in crash, several broken bones in left foot, foot between peg and tree stump, ouch, crushed right broken big toe, cracked collar bone (finished the race) slash across face from a stubborn vine in trees, massive bruise for months just above my...really hurt, looked even worse. Went to the doctor when everything...turned black to be sure nothing was going to fall off. Hyper extend both knees at different times climbing hills and going over backward.
DARN it was fun!
Me coming up and out of a water hole in central FL enduro.
