I am doing some land balancing with bringing in dirt and getting my grass roads complete with adequate base. Bob, would talk about how difficult it was to grow grass under his trees. My project is among many old heritage live oaks where below the trees it is barren except for these thorny leg catching bush type weed. Well we have finally got things smooth under the trees but in the summer all that remains are those damn weeds and barren spots.....same problem Bob had, except he threw some bird seed which has an annual rye grass seed in the package and boom.....he had grass. We planted a 100 lbs last year and through May the property looked spectacular, but as soon as the summer heat came the rye faded away and the other grasses survived.
We will be hiring a mulching machine to bush hog an acre of the property where my wife and I will with electric chain saws spend the winter outside with the dog as we trim back trees and start putting trails on the eight acre parcel where it is a jungle of overgrowth now. We had demolished two homes on this parcel ten years ago, and at one time there were civilized yards and gardens which are now over grown jungle. We hope to restore much of this and a key is to plant the rye after clearing and making sure that the stumps are ground to below a lawn mower deck on the rider so the grassy areas can be maintained by a lawn mower as tree sprouts immediately after bush hogging will begin to sprout. I am convinced that the hard work and sweat has extended my time period, and my white plastic chair will be used much more this winter, but I will smile a little and think of Bob when I see that rye grass filling the voids in December. It is a beautiful place where I can have a fond memory of Bob and only regret I could not share with him this winter.
