The difference between grandsons and granddaughters

We finally have some cold weather and big winds. We have the grandsons for the weekend and we took the golf cart out to collect branches which have blown down, and pick them up and throw them in the river. When we do this with the granddaughters we hardly get any sticks picked up, but with grandsons, they are trying to pick up huge branches and non stop are putting sticks in the river. An amazing difference in energy levels and work ethic.

The funny thing is our three year old dog never fetches a stick for my wife and I, yet as the boys throw sticks into the river, she goes down and pulls some out of the river and puts them right back where the boys picked them up. We think she thinks she is a human child. She gets so excited when the girls or boys visit, and she starts picking sticks up right with them......except in reverse.

Had to come back in as we saw deer hunters on the other side of the river and sadly a bullet on the river can travel a great distance. We never saw as many dead deers in Al, Ky, Tn, and Il as we saw the last 10 days. I am reading that there was a record corn harvest, and some of these deer have become corn fed and do not taste as gamy as the old bamby burgers.

Grandson insists on fishing in the cold. Catches a baby cat......we will let the boys operate the lull to move our school bus framed dock across a channel. Probably Sunday morning because it has gotten cold here.

Cute kid. Would like to see the dog sometime, too. Funny story about the reverse stick-picking.

He was cute until ten minutes ago. I have a grab bar which we installed about six months ago. We built a temporary wall and put a few screws into the floor and a couple into the ceiling and put some inexpensive paneling to cover the framework for the grab bar. Well he started jumping off a couch and using the grab bar to swing around like a monkey ending up next to my chair. I asked him to stop jumping on the couch and swinging off the grab bar. He ignored me. I asked him again to please not be using the grab bar. He ignored me. He finally did a running grab......you got it....the top drywall screws gave and the wall became unstable and I now have no grab bar. I escorted him out of my area of the house and told him he had to stay in the living room because he broke the wall. My wife comes into the house to hear him screaming he hates me, and I tell her what he did......guess who gets chewed out.

Just spent fifteen minutes drilling new support screws to fix it and the youngest boy came in and said who broke the wall.....your brother did and Papa is angry at him for not listening. Yet, Mrs. Seaoat is mad at me for escorting him out of my area. Grandparents cannot spank, and probably this was not a spanking offense, but when you ask somebody twice not to do something and they do it a third time tearing the wall from the ceiling.......oh well when I am gone he can remember a pized off papa.

I don't spank but I don't have to tell them more than twice. He needs a monkey bar outside.

I have thought about getting some of my tow straps and putting them on his ankles and then dangling him over the water upside down with the lull, but the neighbors would probably take a photo and I will be spending the next week in the county jail.......and he would want me to do it again.....and again.....and again. The other difference between boys and girls are that the girls will sit and play quietly with their toys and their imagination, while the boys are rough housing and being extremely irritating to papa. I think I qualify for a grumpy old man.

The best part is the younger grandson is spending all his time with me, as the older is still pouting. He also is giving me peace and quiet as he is in the living room. Win Win. Sunday morning we can get it back to normal.

For your grandsons I will only say wait till they lose interest in their BB guns!

You asked him twice and he totally disobeyed the adult in the room, causing property damage. Not a good sign. Undisciplined children grow up to be disrespectful teens and irresponsible adults. You did the right thing, so stick to your guns and don't let anyone make you feel guilty about it. Your grandson won't curse your memory; on the contrary, when he's a little older he'll only wish he could thank you for showing him a little straight and narrow.

Keep up the good work.

Well he got all excited today when I let him move some logs with the lull. My son chained one of the big trees which did not burn all the way and I allowed him to control the hydraulics and lift the tree into a new position as he sat in my lap........he had a great deal of fun, and I took the boys for another golf cart ride and the dog was in heaven as our stick picking up was reversed once again. I think my dog thinks she is a human kid.

Damn dog thinks she is human when around the granddaughters or grandsons. When I was rough housing with the boys, she would get in between them and want to get rough housed also......barking in her meanest bark to leave my brothers alone. When it was popcorn time, she lines up at my chair wanting her obligatory share thrown at her where she picks it up mid flight and gobbles it down. She sleeps at the feet of the youngest grandson, and had an actual tear after the boys left........she will see them again on Wed and Thursday this week and she will be in heaven spending time with her sister, the grandkids, and the droppings on the floor from seven kids. A dogs life can be pretty sweet sometimes, as she curled up in my lazy boy last night as I stayed up late and watched the Bulls game.......golf cart runs, and pulling sticks thrown into the river and putting them back......a dog's work is never done.

Sweet dog stories, thanks for sharing. Deeply miss having a dog in my life.

Three years ago we had our 15 year old malmute and I approached Mrs. Seaoat and said I wanted a puppy on my bucket list. She goes I do not think I can handle a puppy and some of your issues at the same time. I go Ok, I understand.

Well suddenly my daughter's German shepard who had lived with us as a pup when she was in law school had to be put down with liver cancer, and my SIL was devastated, as was my daughter, and both my wife and I had a huge hole because the shepard was mothered by our dog and she had just been at our home running the islands. She would beg to come to the islands. Well my daughter said they wanted to get two rescue pups, and Mrs. Seaoat said how about us taking one of the pups and if after I pass she cannot handle the pup, they could have their two pups. Well the pups arrive and my wife lets them pick first, we get the left over as the dogs were mostly german shepard, but they were definitely mutt with a big portion of hound.

Well Ellie her sister is bigger and less Shepard, while our Wilma is more Shepard, but she has a beagle butt, and the smartest dog we have ever owned. We call her sister box of rocks as a family, but the funniest thing is that my wife who was reluctant is hooked on this dog and you could not separate the two if you tried.

She worried that a dog at our age would handcuff us, but we have found that hotels welcome dogs and with the internet we do not even make reservations and just walk in and set up. She is cool when we are gone and she does not whine or bark because she understands the routine, and when we travel we try to find dog parks, but having the freedom to run on three miles of roads on the islands, she gets homesick quickly.

I would suggest talking to friends if they would be willing to keep a dog for a few days if you had to travel by plane, but the companionship and knowing what happens to rescue dogs without adoption makes for a perfect match. Also, I believe retired people do a better job spending time with a pup so they do not get anxious with everybody at school or work. We have never had a three year old who is so confident and non anxious. She does not like fireworks, but she is very happy otherwise, and has been a great bucket list addition. She spent a year with the 15 year old who mothered her and made her feel secure, and since the 15 year old passed she regularly spends play time with her sister......like I said a dog's life is pretty sweet.
