I have given up on the history channel

It used to be a source of joy as quality history shows filled air time. Now it is reality TV with pawn shops, pickers, and stupid stuff which has no redeeming value. I have however found Utube to be a fountain of great historical documentaries. I have for the last week been focusing on Civil War battles. We have visited about 10 battlefields and some repeatedly, and the Utube documentaries are excellent. I would like this winter to visit Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Northern Mississippi to visit battlefields. I also would like to visit Gettysburg a third time and stay for a couple days because I have gotten very weak and will need to rest during the day. Finally, I would like to visit Cold Harbor, and the Richmond area battlefields. Bucket list is forming as I may have put this off too long assuming I could walk and stay reasonably strong. In the meantime what a joy to see quality utubes.

My biggest complaint with these reality shows is they are dripping in greed and getting something for nothing. This country took pride in building things, making things, producing things, now with reality TV we think somebody like Trump has produced anything.....he is the apex of this greed where you buy something for less and sell it for more, and produce nothing. I mean if Trump was truly a builder, a shirt maker, a tie maker, I would have some degree of respect, but when I watch the history channel it is all about screwing somebody so I can sell at retail, where rarely is the buyer adding value to the item....he is just stealing something from a person who is ignorant or in tough times.....vulture TV is not all that plays on the History channel........what a sad decline in our civilization.

It is the Pawn shows which I want to puke as this bottom of the barrel ethos has somehow ingrained itself in America morality where those who have assets should have the freedom to screw people who are poor. Our TV has evolved to reflect our ethics. Never in my lifetime did I consider a pawn shop honorable, but a horrible predatory lender who preyed on the poor......yet this is the fair the history channel presents.......please change the name of the channel to reality greed.

One thing should be mentioned.  While it's true the primetime programming on History Channel is now exclusively devoted to those so-called "reality" freaks of nature,  you can still get the history programming during the day.

I am finding so many quality Utubes that I am spending most of the day relearning things which I have not looked at in forty years. I am so tired of the current election cycle, I turn the volume down on the news channels where I can barely hear, and I watch utubes and learn. If something important pops up on the cable news program, I turn it up and pause the video. I am so tired of the mind numbing stupidity connected to the trump campaign and the sad talking heads who spew his poison.......TV has become putrid and rank.

"Pawn Stars" is based on a totally fallacious premise.
Only a moron or someone who wants to see himself on national television would ever take a rare and desirable collectible into a hock shop to sell it.
I visited the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop when I went to Vegas last year and it's exactly as I suspected.  A place where people who've lost their money in the casinos pawn or sell their jewelry so they can go back in the casinos and lose that money too.  Only one thing makes it be any different from any other Vegas hock shop.  It has some showcases with tv show props in it and a t-shirt concession.  lol

Sorry,  Sal.  I'm only expert enough to be able to competently appraise a narrow range of items.
Those would be what I dealt in;  antique coin operated machines, antique advertising items, breweriana (especially vintage motion signs),  vintage audio, antique radio and tv items, vintage musical instruments and amplifiers, early collectible microcomputers and related items, and records.

Coin and stamps are among the items I'm most ignorant about.

If they were mine,  I'd first try to use websites like this...

or ebay or google or printed price guides.

But I never trust general antique dealers to appraise anything unless they specialize in the item.  That can lead to the most misleading pricing of all.
That is really no different than if I was to rely on a general practitioner to decide what my cancer treatment should be.

My wife's father before he died when she was eight gave her about five cigar boxes filled with nickels which were almost entirely Indian head nickels. We plan to get some coin books and divide them among the grandkids. We are not interested in the value......just want to make sure they have them as a keep sake.

I declare all my income, and pay my taxes happily. I am not resentful of the wonderful America we have.......just have no use for the mercenary military doing the bidding of the plutocracy. I do not want my tax dollars building ten fold the military of any other nation. I pay my real estate taxes in Illinois Friday.....happily. I pay my real estate taxes in Florida in November.....happily. Kids get educated......at least in Illinois, I am not entirely sure if money is spent on the schools in Escambia and Santa Rosa County.....
