How in the world did all this happen, anyway, Joani? Were you playing a sport?

In any event, I always say that it's only the people who never DO anything who never get hurt.

Ouch.   This is frighteningly close to the recent sad story of an old friend of mine.  She and her husband were visiting Las Vegas in August.   He was very physically fit and did a workout in the casino hotel's gym, then went to their spa/hot tub to relax for a while.  He was just climbing out of the spa when he slipped on the marble (!!) flooring, fell and sustained devastating, fatal injuries (I presume to the head, but my friend didn't reveal details and I didn't ask).

So thank goodness that wasn't your story; still, your injuries were bad enough, and I'm sorry.

And yes, there is a lawsuit underway in Las Vegas.   Ironically enough, the husband was a personal injury attorney.

OMG....my injuries, while somewhat painful, are more of an inconvenience.

Getting better...PT worked this week on reducing the swelling and bruising in my leg....will start rehabbing the hamstring next week. I hate the cast!

Thank you for asking.

I hate the cast!

Story time. After I broke both radii in my arm in a basketball game, they yanked it without sedative and set the same. I went to school the next day in shock with a plaster cast above the elbow. People were writing cool stuff on the cast and I was completely out of it in shock.

Well a couple weeks go by and we decide to build a raft from an old five hundred gallon oil tank where we cut trees down and lashed trees to our home made built raft. Well there was still ice on the river and we would take the row boat over to an island and work on our raft after school. I was getting very handy with my left hand and I and another were chosen for the maiden voyage of our Tom Sawyer raft. Well I get on it and it is very bouncy because it is sitting way out of the water and lacks balance of another tank. A rather hefty friend gets on next, and panics because of the raft's instability. As he jumps off the raft goes down, and then flips up with me going head backward into the icy river where sections were still completely covered with ice. Pure pain being in icy water and I was in a swift current where if I travel 100 yards I am under the ice flow......well I get lucky and as I am pulled around the island, I hit shallows where the ice had not covered the shore.

So I go to school the next day after using a hair dryer on the "plaster" cast which has now melted most of the written messages off the same, and people start complaining that I smell.........the river was not the cleanest, and when Joanie has them take the cast off she will see an abundance of dead putrid skin which has accumulated under the cast which made a lovely aroma in class. If you remember right guard spray cans......I would empty one each day spraying into the cast so I now smelled like I was in gym class and had gone nuts with the right guard. Finally, had it cut off, and remember walking from the hospital to my mother's business unable to move my arm from the cast position. However, the new cast similar to Joannie's did not smell and I slowly moved my elbow over a couple of days, and bingo.....we were back in the woods and river figuring out our next adventure. I did learn to play tennis left handed and I would walk over to my eighth grade girlfriends house and we would play tennis with my half cast where I developed horrible tennis technique. The best part is at the last two high school reunions she comes over and asks me if I would dance with her....she was a hot eighth grader and she looks good at 55 the last time I saw her. My wife wants to know what is going on, and I explained we only played tennis, but for some reason she was attracted to right guard.

Back when I was a sophomore in high school I used to play a lot of basketball. I'm talking every day for several hours.  There was this one day where I was playing some three on three in the neighborhood and noticed that the school bus was pulling up.  I went up for a dunk with the idea of showing off for any females who may have been on the bus.  I hung on the rim but as my body swung forward, I lost my grip and fell.  It was an awkward fall and I put my right arm (I'm right handed) down to help me brace for the fall.  I could hear the bone snap when I hit the ground.  I remember popping up, not feeling any pain at all, and looking at my arm - which was now bent at roughly a 30 degree angle between my elbow and wrist.  I couldn't believe what i was seeing.  I turn and show it to everyone else on the court and they instantly cringe.  The entire time I was waiting for the pain to kick in but it never did.  Looking back, I must have been in shock.  I ended up going inside my friends house and calling my mom, telling her that I just broke my arm and was walking home.  I ended up yacking on the walk home - probably due to the shock of it all - but oddly enough I never felt any pain.

This was unfortunately just before district tournaments for tennis so I had to sit out that year.  The final diagnosis was that one of the two bones (not sure if it was the radius or ulna) broke and the other sort of bent.  Had to be put under to have that set and ended up wearing a cast for a few months.  I never hung on the rim while dunking ever again unless it was an 8 foot goal.

Referencing Mr. Oats' admonition to joani regarding the cast I too have a bit more to add to my accident on my ten speed on my 36th bd breaking (fracturing) my right arm/elbow as well as well as my left wrist. First, I never missed a day of work. As a locomotive engineer my routine when going on duty was to report in, get a copy of consist, and update myself on traffic ahead and opposing . . . . no big deal. The problem was that it was in October/November when here the weather is still quite warm but because of my injuries I wore a long sleeved jacket and once I park at work I would put both hands in each pocket so no one could see my casts. My brakeman and still a dear friend would come straight to my vehicle and get my grip and carry it to the transport van. The driver would take us to the engines and my friend would always get out first, open the sliding door allowing me to exit the van,m then he would get both our grips and we would say farewell to the driver. Once out of sight I could climb the vertical ladders by exerting the pressure at my the least painful spot on the casts pulling myself up the ladder. I was so fortunate to have him, he could handle the train safely and would do so for the most part the entire trip but when necessary I could apply/reduce power, apply air brake, ring the bell and talk on the radio . . . and once at the final terminal the process of de-boarding and attendant concealment would resume . . . . went on for six weeks. Finally, during this ordeal I was having a hard time with the pain, itching, etc. associated with casts and because the cast on my left wrist was wrapped tightly I made a decision to unwrap it to get some temporary relief . . . . . Holy Crap! . . . . big mistake . . . . once the pressure was relieved holding the fracture it was very very painful and began throbbing horribly . . . I couldn't get it on myself and had my friend put it back on . . . .wasn't worth the relief.

Shock sets up pretty quickly. I remember people in the stands as I was laying on the baseline and my arm was all twisted up, but oddly I was numb. I remember them taking me to the office where they called my mother when the throbbing started.....not acute pain but I could feel my heart beat in the break. The pain came at the setting, and then this incredible warm feeling flowed at the break site after the two doctors who one was holding me down while the other was yanking away.....I screamed at the top of my lungs and when it set....it was instant warmth and relief and I was stopped in mid scream.

Today they would call an ambulance. Today they would use pain pills and set it in surgery with me out. The worse part is I broke some ribs and three toes in a football game when I was at full speed trying to intercept a pass and hit a telephone pole.....my big toenail was ripped off and three of my toes were broken.....I now had knowledge as to what was coming.....pop....pop....pop, but this time I was in great pain from the toenail.......and yanking the toes hardly hurt. I remember how piszed my mother was at my latest sports injury.....we never had health insurance and as a widow......each break was coming out of her pocket. By the time my brother broke his arm in football practice, he could never understand why she was piszed and not sympathetic.

She should have raised daughters because back then girls could not participate in sports.

I did almost the same thing (except no injury) in a high school game. I just took off too early and pinned the ball on the front of the rum. I caught a ton of grief... it was pretty funny.

Guys.....I was an ortho nurse for 15 years. I have smelled the worst. Two stand out, a sweet little old mid-seventies lady who cleaned shrimp and fish while in her  cast. The other one was Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, deceased. Layne had long leg cast and did not bathe for 5 weeks. He was also pierced everywhere....the stench was unbearable.

My wife said most men would dress like Dude if it was not for women.....I better tell her to take a pee test, because I am Dude now......except she beats me at bowling. I am starting to regain some strength since the shots Monday, and I actually cut close to thirty acres of grass Friday......kicked my asz today as my wife had a funeral and instead of changing I kept my pjs on and went out in public with them.....my wallet fell out because PJs were not made for wallets and the pizza place had some new wait staff......the stares were priceless, but then I always leave a 25% tip on pick up and they probably thought I was let out of the local mental institution and did not know how to count......next week i will wear my jeans.......I am afraid I am going to sexually stimulate young women wearing my sexy pjs.........or permanently put the image of the same on their young minds.....forever celibate.

Never broke a bone (other than toes - they don't count), and never had a cavity (thanks fluoride - that's for T). I'm pretty sure I've had a couple of concussions, but we just called it "getting your bell rung" back in the day.

I was 25 and had just accepted a job at an ad agency. On the way to an Astros game, I was involved in a car accident and broke my right ankle...both sockets...because I was wearing platform shoes. It could have been much worse if some of the people behind us hadn't stopped their cars to protect us from another collision. The ambulance driver was planning to take me to Ben Taub...the county...and I said, "No...take me to St. Luke's"...and there was a fantastic orthopedic surgeon on call that night...put a plastic pin in my ankle...a week later, I was on the job (which they held for me), in much pain, with my leg propped on a chair, but I lived upstairs and worked upstairs, and I drove to work braking with my left foot and accelerating with my right. That hard cast itched like nobody's business, and I had bent coathangers everywhere. It was early Summer; the pool was right outside my apartment, so my husband and some of his friends brought over a little sunfish and put it in the pool...at least I could dangle one foot into the water. Thank God for that surgeon. I've never had a problem with that ankle...ever.

It wasn't dr brodsky was it? He fixed my right ankle senior year in high school. The other drs said it was impossible to give me full movement or ever play top level tennis again. But he did it and it was perfect after about a year. It clicks tho... lol.

I have posted a full frontal pic in a canoe shooting some rapids in Canada, and a photo of my wife on that same trip. T had it and would post it periodically, but until I finish my project or die, I do not need any more complications from people trying to F me because I am outspoken. I had a PNJ reporter who I challenged try to out me, and I have recently had a county official figure out who I am because I have been quite vocal about where the Santa Rosa County courthouse belongs and I called that person out that they were trying to get even with Seaoat. I have had a Judge contact me by PM and I have had police officers contact me by PM, but when the PNJ reporter found my private email which was never provided to the PNJ, I knew I had piszed off Earl and one other reporter. So, once the project is done in the fall, I will have probably met many people on the forum, and I will certainly turn around for the camera because I doubt I will make it to Christmas as the four lung tumors are beginning to act up and they told me I had six to nine months of clear breathing before they probably could do the operation one more time and January to June is six months......so you will have to settle for my Oscar Madison rear view for now.
