I made my usual Sunday call to Arizona to check on my mother, and had mentioned how Mickey Rooney had died at 93 and what a sad end to his life with the family fighting over his burial and how his estate had been stolen and squandered by people who took advantage of him in his elder years.

She starts talking about her friend, his second wife and how small the man was, but how big his ego was.........in all of my 62 years she had never told me about her friendship with Betty Jane who became Miss Alabama, nor had she told me she had met Rooney. Here is her link which I just read, and I am simply stunned. Sadly as our parents pass the verbal history is loss. I think we need to take three hour interviews with people about their life and things they did and instead of investing in marble and caskets......simply capture their perceptions during their journey for others to research and understand.

I found his first wife Ava Gardner one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. There is a photo of her when she was just 19 with Rooney which I have seen in a Casino where she was simply stunning. Sinatra eventually married her, but until I saw that photo I never could believe in this mortal world we live in such beauty could ever exist. It is just this one photo....I have seen other photos of her which simply do not compare with this beautiful 19 year old standing next to Rooney.

Rooney signed his will several weeks prior to his death and instructed his lawyer, rather than family, to manage his estate. Rooney's lawyer explained that the intention was to purchase a burial plot, but Rooney was unable to afford the price. Rooney's estate had dwindled to US$18,000, which was left to a stepson, and he was estranged from most of his nine children. His wife, Jan Rooney, will be eligible for Rooney's social security benefits and some of his pension earnings in accordance with a previous agreement. At the time of his death, Rooney owed back taxes to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and California Franchise Tax Board.[6] In a statement on Rooney's personal website shortly after his death, his talent agents, CMG Worldwide, said that Rooney also owed money for outstanding medical bills as well as tax bills, and that contributions from the public were being accepted, with proceeds "donated to help assist with the debts and expenses of Mickey’s estate."

Elder abuse, estranged stepsons at war, his eighth wife caught in the middle: Hollywood's original child star died with an estate and legal affairs in disarray.

"in 2004, Mickey had a tax return that showed $804,000 of income, and the next year something like $690,000 -- yet Mickey and Jan had to refinance their house to pay taxes."
